Critic’s Notebook: 10 Best Shows of 2025, Ranked

Some years, 10 feels like the loneliest number — because any Top 10 list runs the risk of leaving so many worthy titles on the outside looking in. So it was in 2025, with an embarrassment of riches making it tougher than usual to whittle the list of favorites to a mere 10. My criteria, as is often the case, was to focus on the shows and events that have lingered longest in the mind: the ones that thrilled, moved, entertained, and made me wish I had time to watch them all over again. (Inescapable fact: TV rarely slows down, and there’s almost always something, too much, new to watch.)

For the record, my list of honorable mentions (itself incomplete) would have to include several from the ever-adventurous FX/Hulu partnership: the bold and poignant Dying for Sex, the rollicking neo-noir The Lowdown, and the hilarious English Teacher and AdultsNetflix‘s unexpectedly gripping historical docudrama Death by LightningApple TV‘s thrilling sci-fi comedy Murderbot and longtime favorite Slow Horses, AMC‘s evocative Dark Winds, HBO‘s wrenching Task, the fascinating documentary Pee-wee as Himself and the stellar comedy Hacks on HBO Max, and broadcast favorites Ghosts, Brilliant Minds, and first-rate mockumentaries Abbott Elementary and St. Denis Medical.

I’m sure you have favorites of your own, and these are mine.
