9 ‘Widow’s Bay’ Burning Questions for Season 2
Widow’s Bay Season 1 ended with answers to the season’s biggest mystery, but those answers set up new conflicts in Season 2. Thankfully, Widow’s Bay has already been renewed, so those new questions will be addressed. But it will be a while before we see a new episode. Here, we’ve compiled our biggest burning questions that we need answered in Widow’s Bay Season 2. Warning: Widow’s Bay spoilers ahead!
Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) spent most of the finale at Ruth’s (K Callan) house trying to find a reason to justify killing her. He was faced with the Trolley Problem: Does he kill this sweet, innocent woman to save the rest of the town and his own son? Or does he choose not to kill her and doom everyone else?
Ruth, who didn’t know the context of this predicament, said that the trolley is life; you can’t control what happens. But choosing to redirect the trolley’s path would be trying to control it, and she couldn’t make that choice to kill. Bechir (Kevin Carroll) felt differently.
Once he learned that Tom was there to kill Ruth, who was believed to be the last living descendant of curse-bearer Richard Warren (Hamish Linklater), he showed up to take matters into his own hands. He killed Ruth to break the curse and prevent his baby from being born on the island and getting trapped there forever. But Ruth wasn’t the last descendant.
She revealed to Tom that she had a secret daughter, Lauren (Meredith Casey), Tom’s wife. Their son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), is now the last living Warren descendant.
Executive producer Hiro Murai directed Episodes 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10 in Season 1. He told TV Insider that the finale resets the chessboard heading into Season 2, completely redefining Tom’s goals. He wanted to break the curse before, but breaking it would bring his son’s death. So, now what?
“What I love about how the season concluded is that it resets the table so you can do small, episodic, anthology episodes again, but there’s the added complication that Tom knows about Evan; he has to protect him from getting out to the rest of the island that he is the last descendant,” Murai said. “Bechir and him have a secret together. They both know that they went to Ruth’s to kill her. And so there’s a complicated dynamic there. I just think it just ratchets up what works in the show, what’s been working in the first season, without changing the dynamics.”

1. How will Tom and Bechir address their shared secret about Ruth?
Tom and Bechir were both faced with an impossible choice in the finale. Tom decided against killing Ruth eventually, but Bechir followed through with killing her to hopefully end the Richard Warren bloodline and break the curse. But Bechir didn’t know that Evan is Ruth’s biological grandson, making him the last living Warren descendant. She revealed this to Tom in the finale, and it changed Tom’s mind about his plan. But now, Tom and Bechir know that both of them went to Ruth’s house with the intent to kill her. Will they try to hide this together in Season 2?
2. Are Chelle and the baby OK?
Bechir’s plot in the last two episodes were defined by trying to get his wife, Chelle (Sipiwe Moyo) off the island before she gave birth to their baby (because if the baby is born on Widow’s Bay, it can never leave). The island feeds on the fear of Widow’s Bay residents and demands ritual human sacrifices. If island natives cross the “Dead Zone,” the island’s maritime boundary, they experience extremely rapid physiological decline.
Bechir and Chelle are not natives, but their baby could be. Chelle went into labor in the finale, but we haven’t seen the baby yet. Are mom and baby OK?
3. Will Tom tell anyone the truth about Evan?
With Evan now the last living descendant, the curse can’t be broken without Evan dying for the cause. Obviously, Tom won’t let this happen. But will he keep this secret completely to himself? Could he tell Wyck (Stephen Root) or Patricia (Kate O’Flynn)? And how will people react if and when they find out?
4. Will Tom tell Evan the truth?
Evan deserves to know the truth about his circumstances. If Tom tells no one else about Evan’s lineage, he should tell his son. But will he continue to tell protective lies instead, and could Evan figure things out before Tom has the chance to tell him? He’ll have to explain why they can’t take their trip to Boston somehow.
5. Was Richard Warren's first wife the first human sacrifice?
We know that Richard killed his first wife, and she seems to have been one of the human sacrifices fed to the island. Could she have been the very first one? This could make flashbacks to her character important in Season 2.
This leads us to another question: Could we see Betty Gilpin return as Sarah, Richard’s second wife who got his kids off of the island and killed all but one of them in the process?
6. Did anyone already know about the archival footage?
Dale (Jeff Hiller) discovered archival footage from around the 1950s/1960s that explained how to make human sacrifices to the island. It even showed a group of victims being lined up to feed the curse in the bunker. Dale screamed, “This place is a death trap, run!” to the entire bunker of tourists and residents after watching this footage, causing complete chaos, but we need to know if anyone alive on the island already knew about this footage and the need for sacrifices.
Going off of that, who was that council of people who operated the sacrifice system? We’ll need more information about them in Season 2.
7. Does Wyck know about the council?
Wyck has been the local lore expert all season long. We have to wonder if he’s heard rumblings of the archival footage and the council that ritually sacrificed people in his lifetime. Furthermore, now that he’s so close to Tom, how will he react to Evan being the key to breaking the curse? We can’t imagine Wyck wanting to harm Evan in any way, so maybe he and Patricia will help Tom figure out an alternative way to break the spell, or at least protect Tom’s secrets.
8. Could the Boogeyman come back?
If the island is still demanding sacrifices, can it bring back whatever supernatural beings it wishes? The Boogeyman was cemented into his basement by the locals after killing those teen girls years before, but the island brought him back to haunt Patricia years later.
Patricia made sure his body was turned to ashes after he was killed, but if he was a supernatural being in the first place, who’s to say the island couldn’t just conjure him up again? By that logic, could the Sea Hag, the clown, and even Richard Warren himself return?
9. Was the island entity trying to keep Ruth's bloodline alive?
Ruth showed Tom a scrapbook of her life in the finale, and she pointed out a bunch of men in who “made a pass” at her when she was younger. It was a lot of men, and she was a beauty queen, so that makes sense. But what if the curse entity was trying to keep the Warren bloodline alive by making sure Ruth had children? The big question here is: How much control can the island exert over the residents?
