‘VisionQuest’: A Guide to Marvel’s Androids, Synthezoids & Artificial Intelligence

VisionQuest - Episode 1 - James D'Arcy, Orla Brady, Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer
Disney+

Marvel has never been short on artificial intelligence, from Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) trusty J.A.R.V.I.S. to the villainous Ultron (James Spader) and the powerful synthezoid Vision (Paul Bettany). Now, Disney+’s VisionQuest is bringing together some of the MCU’s most recognizable synthetic beings.

In the series, White Vision retreats into a custom-built mindscape populated by AI personalities and other artificial lifeforms. He also battles a few figures from the comics who finally find their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From familiar faces to lesser-known creations pulled from Marvel Comics, VisionQuest brings together an unusual assortment of androids, robots, synthezoids, and artificial intelligences, each with their own history in the Marvel universe.

In Marvel lore, an android is an artificial being designed to resemble or function like a human. A synthezoid, however, is a more advanced creation made from synthetic, organic-like tissue that mimics human biology, allowing for emotions, healing, and other human characteristics. Artificial intelligence (AI), meanwhile, refers to computer-based systems capable of learning, reasoning, and making decisions, often without a physical body, as seen with Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. (originally voiced by Bettany for the screen), then E.D.I.T.H. (originally voiced by Dawn Michelle King, now played by Emily Hampshire).

Here’s a look at the many androids, synthezoids, and artificial intelligences who are either appearing in VisionQuest or might get a mention, and their connections to the larger Marvel universe.

The Vision (Paul Bettany)

One of Marvel’s most recognizable Avengers, Vision is a powerful synthezoid created by Ultron. In Marvel comics, his body comes from the original Human Torch, while his brain patterns are based on Wonder Man.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision’s origins differ slightly. Ultron creates his synthetic vibranium body using Dr. Helen Cho’s (Claudia Kim) Regeneration Cradle. However, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) upload the artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. into the body instead. With the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead, Vision comes to life when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) strikes him with lightning.

Ultron (James Spader)

Ultron is a rogue artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner using code from Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) scepter, which contained the Mind Stone. Unlike Vision, Ultron is not a synthezoid but an AI inhabiting mechanical robotic bodies. Introduced to the MCU in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he concludes that humanity threatens world peace and plots global extinction by lifting Sokovia into the atmosphere and crashing it into Earth. The Avengers destroy his robotic army, while Vision eliminates his final remaining drone. Before its destruction, Vision confronts Ultron, and despite their shared belief that humanity is doomed, their opposing views lead to a final clash. Vision destroys Ultron with the Mind Stone.

J.A.R.V.I.S. (James D'Arcy)

J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System) is Tony Stark’s AI assistant, named after the Stark family’s longtime butler and Tony’s father figure, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy). In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron seemingly destroys J.A.R.V.I.S. as he attempts to protect the world’s nuclear codes. However, his consciousness survives by scattering across the internet. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner upload his surviving programming into Ultron’s synthetic vibranium body, which, combined with the Mind Stone and a boost of lightning from Thor, brings Vision to life. Stark subsequently replaces J.A.R.V.I.S. with a new AI assistant, F.R.I.D.A.Y.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady)

F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Female Replacement Intelligent Digital Assistant Youth) is an advanced artificial intelligence program created by Tony Stark. She serves as Iron Man’s secondary user interface, tactical combat assistant, and digital secretary across Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tony Stark Designed and installed F.R.I.D.A.Y. (voiced by Kerry Condon) as his new primary artificial intelligence assistant during Avengers: Age of Ultron after J.A.R.V.I.S. evolved and was uploaded into the synthetic body that became Vision.

F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s status following Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame was never officially shown or defined in subsequent MCU films or series.

E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire)

E.D.I.T.H. (Even Dead, I’m The Hero) is an advanced AI defense system created by Tony Stark and left to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) following Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Accessible through high-tech glasses, E.D.I.T.H. controls a powerful satellite and drone network. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, an overwhelmed Peter hands control to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a.k.a. Mysterio, who exploits the technology for his own schemes. Peter eventually defeats Beck and reclaims the glasses, but E.D.I.T.H.’s fate remains unclear following Spider-Man: No Way Home.

It appears she is saved as a backup and now residing with other A.I. as avatars in Vision’s mind.

Dum-E & U (Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer)

Dum-E and Dum-U are Tony Stark’s robotic hydraulic assistant arms, originally built by a teenage Stark to help in his workshop. Despite their clumsy antics, the pair become fixtures of his Malibu laboratory, assisting with experiments and Iron Man suit development. Stark later rebuilds Dum-U, who is last seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, helping Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) pack up Avengers Tower for the move to the Upstate Compound.

In VisionQuest, the robotic duo appears in human form, played by Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer, within White Vision’s mindscape.

Jocasta (T'Nia Miller)

Jocasta is a powerful silver android, traditionally classified as a gynoid, or female humanoid robot. In Marvel Comics, she is created by Ultron using a titanium-steel body and the brain patterns of Janet van Dyne, a.k.a. the Wasp. Her MCU connection dates back to Avengers: Age of Ultron, when Tony Stark searches through his backup AI programs for a replacement after J.A.R.V.I.S. becomes part of Vision. One of the storage cards is labeled “Jocasta,” teasing the character’s existence in the MCU.

In VisionQuest, her avatar is played by T’Nia Miller.

Jim Hammond

Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, debuts in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939, decades before the Fantastic Four‘s Johnny Storm adopt the name. Created by Dr. Phineas Horton, Hammond is an android whose synthetic cells burst into flames when exposed to oxygen. During World War II, he fights alongside Captain America and Namor.

Hammond makes a brief MCU appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger. During the 1943 Stark Expo, a blond man in a red suit is displayed inside an oxygen-free glass chamber labeled “The Synthetic Man” by Phineas Horton.

While not listed as a part of VisionQuest, his legacy is important to the saga.
