Since St. Alphonso’s Academy is an all-girls school, “Supernatural: The Musical” put a gender-bending twist on its versions of Dean (Alyssa Lynch, far left) and Sam (Natalie Sharp, far right). Though the real Dean was initially skeptical, Ackles definitely approved: “When Jared and I showed up on set, we sat in the audience like we were at a theater production and watched them. They were awesome.”

Despite the episode’s premise, there was no Winchester warbling from either Dean or Sam (Jared Padalecki). “We’ve been joking about a Supernatural musical for years,” Ackles says. “The fact that we were actually able to pull one off without the two lead actors singing at all was a pretty smart way to do it.”

“When I first read the script, I thought, ‘Why are we doing something so cheesy?’” admits Ackles (center) of the plot, which featured a high school production of the Winchester brothers’ lives, filled with meta references to the fandom. “By the time the episode was shot, my worries were replaced by excitement. It turned out to be one of the best episodes we’ve ever done.”

“Fan Fiction” was a Valentine to Supernatural’s devoted following. “It would take a four-hour episode to encompass the creativity that our fans have brought to the show,” Ackles says. “In only 42 minutes, [the producers] did an outstanding job of harnessing that inspiration while paying homage to the fact that our show is an unlikely success story.”

The episode ended with a surprising twist: the return of prophet Chuck Shurley, aka Carver Edlund (played by Rob Benedict, with guest star Katie Sarife), the author whose novels inspired the musical. “I hope Carver has the last word on Supernatural,” Ackles admits. “I love that there’s somebody keeping tabs on these two guys. There might be a road map to the entire story.”
