The stakes are hardly ever higher on TV than they are for the medium’s fictional firefighters, cops, and paramedics, who put their lives on the line as part of their daily work. And true to life, not everyone ends their shift alive.

In the ’80s and ’90s, character deaths on Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue left fans blue, and more recently, Fire Country and Station 19 had viewers’ tears flowing as if from a fire hose.

From our recollection, these are the saddest first-responder deaths TV writers have scripted. But if we missed a late character you’re still mourning, post their obit in the comment section.

11. Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke), Law & Order: SVU

In SVU’s 21st season, Tucker tells ex Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) he’s dying from brain cancer he attributes to his work sifting through World Trade Center rubble post-9/11. They say goodbye, ruing the time they didn’t have together. And later, the Internal Affairs captain dies by suicide. “He left his wife a letter, his benefits, his pension,” a tearful Benson tells Fin Tutuola (Ice-T). “He told her that he didn’t want her to spend the best years of her life taking care of a dying man.”

If you or anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or dial 988. If you or a loved one are in immediate danger, call 911.

Season-ending cliffhangers are a staple of firefighter shows, and Fire Country is no exception. Vince’s death hits the Cal Fire community hard, especially son Bode (Max Thieriot). “I’m going to spend the rest of my career protecting my father’s town, my father’s station, and my father’s mission,” Bode says at his dad’s funeral.

A shocked Capt. Frank Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti) breaks the news to the Metropolitan Police Department staff, adding, “I don’t have too many words, people. It’s going to be a difficult day.
