Billy Porter’s Revolutionary Win

Pose‘s Billy Porter took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, but the excitement extended beyond the statuette. Porter is the first openly gay African-American man to win in the category.

Peter Dinklage’s Record-Breaking Victory

It’s nothing new to see Peter Dinklage take home Emmy gold for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, but his record fourth win during the 2019 ceremony set him in tier above the rest. Dinklage is now the actor with most Emmys for the category Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He previously shared a three-win tie with Aaron Paul, Art Carney and Don Knotts.

Phoebe’s Night

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the first to win in both Lead Actress and Writing categories since Tina Fey did in 2008 for 30 Rock. Waller-Bridge took home Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series as well as overall Outstanding Comedy Series awards for Fleabag during the ceremony.

Jharrel Jerome Proves Age Is Only a Number

When They See Us star Jharrel Jerome is the the youngest actor to take home Emmy gold for Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie. He’s also the only Afro-Latino to win in the category.

Tony Shalhoub Goes Gold for a Fourth Time

Former Monk star Tony Shalhoub surprised viewers when he won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. But there was greater significance to his victory than others as the Emmy was Shalhoub’s record fourth award. He previously won three Emmys for his role as the titular Monk.

Amazon’s Big Night

This year’s ceremony was Amazon’s biggest as they took home the most awards they ever have from the Emmys with four for Fleabag, two for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and one for A Very British Scandal as well as additional Creative Arts Emmys.

It was a night of surprises but also of history being made at the 2019 Emmys.
