“What I’ve dedicated my life to is… revenge,” says Emma Harte (Brenda Blethyn), a self-made mogul whose family appears to have forgotten exactly who they are dealing with, in BritBox’s A Woman of Substance.

The series is an eight-part miniseries that reminds viewers why the most dangerous creature on Earth is a woman scorned. The period piece follows a single woman as she exacts revenge time and again on those who have underestimated her.

Based on the novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford, A Woman of Substance is a new adaptation of the classic story as an eight-part historical drama spanning more than 60 years. Starring Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds as Emma Harte, the series follows a determined Yorkshire kitchen maid who rises through the ranks of society to both better herself and serve piping hot revenge to those who thought less of her, because success is the sweetest revenge.

The story follows two timelines of Emma Harte: one as she builds her empire beginning in the early 1910s, and the other in the 1970s, at the height of her success, as her family schemes to take her business away from her.

The rags-to-riches story centers on a scrappy but impoverished housemaid, Emma Harte (Reynolds), in 1911, as she works at Fairley Hall. After a forbidden romance goes awry and she is deeply wronged by almost every member of the Fairley family, Emma uses her intelligence and tenacity to start her own business, eventually expanding into textiles, luxury goods, and a retail empire.

Then, in the 1970s, an older Emma (Blethyn) faces a new inner family turmoil as those closest to her turn traitor. Viewers will watch as Emma climbs the ranks, transforming hard work and sharp instincts into vast wealth, which she ultimately uses to punish those who tried to silence her, crush her spirit, or take what was never theirs.
