ABC Orders Hayley Atwell Drama ‘Conviction’ to Series; Cancels ‘Marvel’s Agent Carter’

Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s Agent Carter) is finding another home on ABC.

The network has officially ordered Atwell’s new drama Conviction for the 2016-17 season. Atwell plays Hayes Morrison, a lawyer and former First Daughter who takes a job offered by her nemesis NY District Attorney Wayne Wallis (Eddie Cahill) to avoid going to jail for cocaine possession. Hayes uses her new position at the Conviction Integrity Unit to fight wrongful conviction cases and advance her high-powered political family.

Conviction also stars Shawn Ashmore as Sam Sullivan, Merrin Dungey as Maxine, Emily Kinney as Tess Thompson, Manny Montana as Franklin “Frankie” Rios and Daniel DiTomasso as Jackson Morrison.

Produced by The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios, Conviction is co-created by writer Liz Friedman and director Liz Friedlander and executive produced by Friedman, Friedlander, Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper.

With Conviction‘s series order, ABC has officially pulled the plug on Atwell’s previous series, Marvel’s Agent Carter, after two seasons.

      Just catching up on the show and if the quality Is the same while I watch the now-final ep, I'll feel the same way...

    Did Agent Carter even do 1 FULL season?? A FULL season would be 22-24 episodes, and I think Agent Carter only did 2 "seasons" of 10 episodes each. I don't think the show was ever really given a chance. I look forward to checking out Conviction in the fall.

      The first season was only 8 episodes. The second one was 10. I thought the second one worked since it followed one plotline from beginning to end.

      They didn't do a technically "full" season, but I think that was how the show was meant to work. They seemed to treat each season as a miniseries with one plot line that was followed from beginning to end.

      Not all shows produce 20+ episodes per season. British shows, for example, tend to be shorter, around 10-12. Then you have soaps and shows like Degrassi (Canadian) that had up to 40+ episodes for a few seasons. Jessica Jones and Daredevil had 13 episodes each.

      I wish there were more episodes, but they seemed to do a good job at pacing with the serial story without filler / standalone episodes, which are common on shows with longer seasons. If Carter did have 20 episodes per season they probably would have broken it up, first 10 in the spring, second 10 in the fall, with their own plot lines.

      Oh well. In any case it's gone. I hope they do some shorts on occasion, or if we are really, really lucky Netflix will take a look at picking it up, as they have five Marvel shows either produced or planning on being produced.

      Off Topic: If you were paying attention to the last Agents of Shield episode Carter is on the front page of a news paper, reporting her death. 🙁

    Oh Boy!!! Another lawyer show. More legal fighting for the underclass attacked by the huge, unfeeling, male dominated, greedy, capitalistic, governmental monolith.

    Agent Carter was well acted, fun and had an interesting semi-historical subplot.Time to return to cable, Hulu and Netflix for interesting programming.

      Shows which take place in other eras are usually very interesting, but they seldom do well in the ratings. They've all but stopped teaching history around here, and the kids have no interest whatsoever in things that happened in the past.

      That may have been why one of my favorite shows of the early '90s-the late '40s-set "Homefront"-only lasted two seasons...

      Homefront, and more recently Vegas, Pan Am, The Playboy Club, etc. Vegas had especially good overall ratings (it averaged over 10 million), but it bombed in the 18-49 demo!

    I really liked this show. The only Marvel-type show I watch, and Hayley made it work! But 'won't watch the new show'? That's just dumb. Rarely into lawyer shows, but I'll give it a try.
