Dame Judi Dench revealed the brutal reason a “big Hollywood producer” said she’d never make a film.
In her new memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?, Dench, 91, recounted feedback she received at the start of her acting career, when she was 23.
“When I started out at the Vic, very few people aspired to work in cinema. I certainly never expected to,” the Skyfall actress wrote, per Entertainment Weekly. “Then one day, I was invited to meet a big Hollywood producer at his office near Hyde Park.”
Dench continued, “He stared at me for a long time, then said, ‘Very nice to meet you but you’ll never make a movie because you have every single thing wrong with your face.’ I suppose that was the era when you had to be quite a looker.”
Still, Dench said the producer was “very polite” while tearing apart her looks.
“Anyway, with amazing presence, I said, ‘Thank you very much for your time,’ stood up, put the chair back against the wall,” she detailed. “And as I left the room I thought, What a relief, I can now go back to the Vic and throw all my energies into becoming a theatre actor.”
Of course, Dench went on to play countless memorable film roles, including M in the James Bond franchise and Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love (1998), for which she won an Oscar.
The actress also reflected on the lasting impact those comments had through her career.
“Maybe that’s why I’m so unsure of myself in films,” Dench speculated. “It’s something I never really got over because I knew it was true. Anyway, I’ve since reconciled myself to it.”
So, who was this Hollywood producer? Dench’s lips are sealed.
“I won’t tell you who said it,” she wrote. “Dead now.”
Aside from the James Bond movies and Shakespeare in Love, Dench is known for her roles in Mrs. Brown (1997), Iris (2001), Notes on a Scandal (2006), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), and Philomena (2013), among others.
