‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Aftershow: Tony Curran on Lovat’s Horrible Acts

“There’s no scandal when your wife dies.” Those chilling words closed out the eighth episode of this Outlander prequel’s second season. They were uttered by time traveler Julia Beauchamp (Hermione Corfield) who was considering her potential fate as she watched her evil husband Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) flirt heavily with the rich and well-connected Margaret Grant (Erin Shanagher). It wouldn’t surprise Outlander: Blood of My Blood fans — or Julia — if the self-interested Lovat, who is a rapist, a poisoner, a traitor, and a generally wicked soul, devised a plan to kill his current wife so he could, in his eyes, trade up.

“It’s going to be a very dangerous time for Julia. Margaret’s caught Lovat’s eye and Julia’s cloak is on a shaky peg,” Curran told TV Insider in his signature colorful style. Watch the video above for our full conversation with the actor. We also check in with Rory Alexander and Ruby Fubara about the developments in Murtagh and Grace’s relationship.

Curran also reflected on one of Lovat’s most horrible acts, which happened in the fourth episode. He poisoned his bastard son Brian’s (Jamie Roy) love, Ellen Mackenzie (Harriet Slater), to end her pregnancy and prevent her from ever conceiving again. Lovat believes a prophecy that “his” infant son with Julia (actually, her son with her 20th century husband, Jeremy Irvine‘s Henry) can become king if he’s the last of the Lovat line. The cruel sabotage of Ellen’s fertility was to prevent any more bairns in the Lovat bloodline. So, can he leave Brian and Ellen well enough alone now?

“As long as he thinks the deed is done, as it were. It’s such an awful thing to discuss, but I guess it is part of our story. Destroying someone’s womb is a horrendous thing to do,” Curran says. Watch the video to hear the actor take us behind the scenes of shooting his first scene with Slater, how close he believes Brian came to killing his father, and what he thinks may happen next.

There’s no question that what’s next for Highlander Murtagh and maidservant Grace won’t be easy after they learned her job is taking her to the West Indies.

“He’s not going to take this lying down for sure,” says Alexander, whose character proposed that they run away together. “I think the thing that’s sometimes overlooked for him is going, ‘What happens if Grace gets caught?’ There is quite a severe danger to her life. While love is a life-giving force, it can’t save you from being killed for getting some stuff wrong. So, it could be the only option left to keep her alive is to not follow his own heart. But I can’t imagine that he would do that. There’s probably other routes for him.”
