What To Know

  • Coco Gauff made her music video debut in Gunna’s “Pop It,” directed by Spike Jordan.
  • Here’s how the appearance came to be.

Coco Gauff starred in her first music video earlier this month by making a cameo in four-time Grammy-nominated rapper Gunna’s “Pop It,” directed by Spike Jordan.

The 22-year-old opens the video decked out in a Miu Miu bralette, mini skirt, and knee-high leather boots on a red clay tennis court in Atlanta while serving an ace directly into the camera lens.

The Athletic reports that the collaboration came together after Gunna and Jordan, who recently got into tennis while traveling in France, decided to learn from the Grand Slam champion.

“Why not learn from the best?” Jordan told the site. Securing Gauff wasn’t difficult since they found out she was already a fan of the rapper’s music.

Jordan also praised Gauff’s poise on set, noting that her confident demeanor stood out. “Coco is special because she’s so young, and the way she carried herself, it was confident,” Jordan also told The Athletic. “She knows exactly who she is.”

While the “Pop It” music video premiered on October 9, it’s already accumulated more than 4 million views on YouTube, and fans are loving the tennis star’s foray into music.

One user on YouTube commented, “Man brought in Coco Gauff to premiere the new music. I got a feeling this is gonna be hard. Then again the guy dont miss.” Another user wrote, “Coco is a flex.”

Another user who seemed surprised that Gunna managed to collaborate with Coco wrote, “How TF bro managed to get Coco on this one. Speakers buzzing on this one.” Another comment read, “LET’S GO COCO!”

Gauff also promoted the music video across her own social media accounts like Instagram where she shared a post with the caption “a lil side quest for the culture thank you for having me @gunna,” and included behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the shoot.

“You’re really that girl,” fellow tennis star Alex Eala wrote in the comments, while the official Spotify account wrote, “Coco said side quest accepted.”

While Gauff’s appearance in Gunna’s video marks her highest-profile entertainment crossover yet, her ties to the music world already run deep. She has shared hitting sessions and mutual appreciation with artists like Dev Hynes, Faye Webster, SZA, and Tyler, The Creator, who referenced her in his track “Thought I Was Dead.”

Gauff’s cameo reflects a broader cultural shift among tennis’s younger athletes, as players like Naomi Osaka and Carlos Alcaraz express their identities off the court through avenues like music and fashion.

Outside of music, Gauff has an array of brand partnerships across the sports apparel, luxury fashion, and lifestyle categories, including Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, and New Balance, where she has released the CG1, CG2, and Coco Delray signature sneaker lines.

The video came out shortly after Gauff withdrew from the Wuhan Open due to fatigue and after receiving a wave of racist online harassment, which has been condemned by her fans and the United Nations Human Rights Office.
