‘Lupin’: Will There Be a Season 5? That 3-Year Hiatus Explained

Omar Sy as Assane in 'Lupin' Season 4

Omar Sy adds co-showrunner to his resume in Lupin Season 4. The star of the French Netflix series that became a global hit returned after a three-year hiatus on the condition of more creative control. Now that he has that influence, will Lupin be renewed for Season 5 and perhaps return sooner?

Ahead of Lupin Part 4, here’s what we know about the show’s future.

Is Lupin renewed for Season 5?

Lupin Part 4 premieres on Friday, October 23, on Netflix. As of the time of publication, Lupin has not been renewed for Season 5, but Seasons 1-3 were in the Netflix Top 10 in 90 countries, and Netflix says that the series has generated $100 million for the French economy. Parts 1 and 2 came out in 2021, and Part 3 came out in 2023.

With Sy’s creative expectations met, and given that Part 4 has never been referred to as the final season, it’s possible that fans will get a Lupin Season 5. (Sy is co-showrunner alongside Louis Leterrier, and they’re also co-producers under their Carrousel Studios banner.) While Sy has a very successful global career (he’s currently filming Bradley Cooper‘s Ocean’s 11 prequel with Margot Robbie and has over 2 million followers on Instagram), his showrunner position is a sign of continued investment in the series that could lead to shorter waits between Lupin seasons.

Plus, Season 4 introduces a new, bigger, and more dangerous villain, and Sy has said that they made this season more like a blockbuster, so it’s a bit of a series reset that implies the desire for more.

Sy was an artistic producer on Season 3, which came out on October 5, 2023, and previous seasons. There were “quite a few moments in previous seasons when I felt frustrated because things I wanted didn’t necessarily end up on screen,” he told Variety. “So, my condition for continuing was that I would have a little more say in the decisions.”

Being promoted to co-showrunner in addition to his starring role “allowed [him] to change things,” Sy said.

Lupin is inspired by the gentleman detective and thief Arsène Lupin, a character created by French author Maurice Leblanc.

The Netflix series follows Assane Diop (Sy), a modern-day man who uses Leblanc’s Lupin stories as his personal guidebook for his elaborate heists carried out on a quest for revenge. But in Season 4, the plot diverges more from Leblanc than ever before to create more original storytelling.

“We’re moving a little further away from Maurice Leblanc,” Sy told Variety. “We brought it more into our own universe. That’s why we’re going further into the prison setting, introducing new technologies and all these different elements. We’re embracing modernity, whether it’s through the prison itself or all the technology that the copycat uses to trap Assane.”

The new season begins four years after the end of Part 3. Assane (Sy) is still in prison. “For him, Lupin is no more: he wants to serve out his sentence and keep the promise he made to his son to go and meet their family in Senegal,” the season description says. “But his plans are turned upside down by a mysterious announcement signed by Lupin: multiple museums are to be hit with simultaneous heists!”

“In spite of heightened security, the thefts go off as planned,” it continues. “Assane proclaims his innocence, but everything points to his guilt. A camera even shows him in one of the museums during a robbery in which Captain Belkacem [Shirine Boutella] is seriously injured. To prove his innocence and unmask the copycat, Assane must escape and don the Lupin costume once more.”

Sy told The Hollywood Reporter that the intention with the Season 4 return was to make the series bigger and more like a blockbuster.

“It’s really complicated when you have a show that’s successful,” he said. “How and why do you go back? So we tried to keep what we had and what we think made the success of the show, but at the same time, you need novelty.”

Who is in the Lupin Season 4 cast?

Sy stars as Assane Diop alongside Ludivine Sagnier (Claire), Antoine Gouy (Benjamin Ferel), Soufiane Guerrab (Youssef Guédira), and Shirine Boutella (Sofia Belkacem).
