‘Wheel of Fortune’ Fans Go Wild Over Olivia Rodrigo’s New Music Video

Olivia Rodrigo in the "expectations" music video

In Olivia Rodrigo‘s “expectations” music video, she gave more and more and more and more game show references that fans went wild over. The singer released the song, alongside the music video, as a single on Friday, October 16, with Chappell Roan.

“Expectations” quickly became a fan favorite off Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love, which was released on June 12. This is the fourth single behind “Drop Dead,” “The Cure,” and “Stupid Song.”

The video opened on “The Big Expectations Show,” which was a spoof on Match Game, with Talking Heads’ David Byrne as host Johnny Johnson. Rodrigo showed up in three multi-colored boxes with lights around them, which was a nod to the original version of the show. Rodrigo begins to sing the lyrics to “expectations” as the video flips to Wheel of Fortune.

“A Bar in Silver Lake” is the puzzle the contestants have to try to guess, which is a reference to the lyrics “Don’t think my future husband’s at this bar in Silver Lake” in the song. Later in the video, the two women recreate the opening from the early 1990s, which features hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White as cartoons flying by on an animated spaceship that is supposed to resemble a wheel.

Fans reacted to the Wheel of Fortune recreation on Reddit. “That segment of the music video was my favorite; I liked the art. I didn’t know it was pulled directly from WoF,” one said.

“Good design!” another said.

“The little animations of Chapple and Olivia is bringing me so much joy,” a YouTube fan said.

“This has to be Olivia’s best music video by far,” another commented.

“This is like one of the coolest music videos I’ve ever seen,” one last fan said.

As the song gets to its infectious chorus, different versions of Rodrigo show up in the blocks on Hollywood Squares, which was called “Hollywood X’s” in the video. Although the game was not played, she did deliver the chorus while dancing and singing in the squares.

Then, “Sister Squabble,” between Rodrigo and Roan, is played. This is a parody of Family Feud. The Rodrigos, which featured the singer and three punk rock people, were the returning champions, while the Roans, featuring the singer and three drag queens, were first-time finalists.

Roan delivered a new verse in the song as an answer on the game show. Then, the women sang back and forth while standing at Jeopardy! podiums and answering clues off the iconic blue board.

The video then circles back to Roan in the previous games Rodrigo was in, with Rodrigo joining her in some of the segments. In it, Roan sang from the perspective of a lesbian, delivering new lyrics.

Rodrigo has been clues on both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune in the past. She guest-presented a Jeopardy! category in July called “Women in Music.”
