‘DINKS’: Prime Video Orders Improvised Comedy Series from Marta Kauffman

Prime Video is putting a new spin on the traditional sitcom with DINKS (an acronym for “dual income, no kids”), a new improvised comedy starring real-life married couple June Diane Raphael and Paul Scheer, alongside Jon Gabrus.

Helmed by Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman, the series marks the streaming service’s first venture into multi-camera comedy, bringing a familiar television format into the streaming era with a few unexpected twists.

The series follows a season-long storyline centered on Raphael and Scheer’s child-free couple, but with a twist: Each episode’s dialogue will be entirely improvised, incorporating suggestions from the live studio audience. The result is a blend of traditional sitcom storytelling and spontaneous comedy, with no two tapings quite alike.

DINKS is also shaking things up on the business side, with an unusual production partnership. Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate Television have teamed up with Kauffman and Canter’s Okay Goodnight and Publicis Media Content Innovation, bringing the advertising world into the mix. By involving an ad agency from the start, the series is exploring a different way to fund and develop television projects.

“I’ve always said I wouldn’t do another multi-cam unless someone was able to reinvent it. Okay Goodnight and I got tired of waiting, and decided we should do it ourselves,” said Kauffman. “It’s what I hoped it would be: unique, hilarious and warm. Shooting this show is like being on a roller coaster in the dark. You have no idea where it’s going to go, but you know it’s going to be fun.”
