For nearly two decades, Heartland has welcomed viewers into rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes for the story of Amy Fleming (Amber Marshall), a gifted young horse trainer who inherits her late mother’s remarkable ability to heal troubled horses. Based on the book series by Lauren Brooke, the series follows Amy as she navigates life, love, and family alongside her grandfather Jack Bartlett (Shaun Johnston) and the rest of the Fleming-Bartlett clan.

Since premiering on October 14, 2007, Heartland has become Canada’s longest-running one-hour scripted drama, spanning 20 seasons and nearly 280 episodes. And while the show’s heartfelt storytelling and memorable characters have kept fans coming back year after year, the stunning scenery has become just as much a part of its appeal.

So where exactly is Heartland filmed? From the iconic family ranch to the lush countryside surrounding it, here’s a look at the real-life locations that bring the series to life.

Where does Heartland take place?

Heartland takes place on a family horse and cattle ranch in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, near the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta, Canada.

Fans of the book series might remember that the series was originally set in Virginia, U.S., but the TV adaptation moved the setting to Canada.

The exterior scenes for the town of Hudson are filmed in High River, Alberta, which is about 30 minutes south of Calgary. Meanwhile, the iconic Heartland Ranch house and barn are filmed on a private cattle ranch near Millarville, Alberta.

All indoor and studio scenes — such as the inside of the ranch house and local veterinary clinic — are filmed on a soundstage in Calgary, Alberta.
