It’s been nine years since (what we thought was) the series finale of Girls aired on HBO, but on October 13, Variety confirmed that the beloved series is returning for a seventh season.

Girls, which was created by Lena Dunham, originally ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. In 2025, Dunham told The Ankler, “We haven’t had a conversation about a reunion only because we always said when the show ended that if we were going to go back, it would have to be at such a different phase in their lives.”

Dunham previously explained why Girls came to an end after six seasons, despite fan support for the show to continue. “Jenni [Konner], Judd [Apatow], and I always talked about wanting the series to have a really clear end,” she revealed in 2017. “At a certain point, girls become women. That’s not the story we set out to tell. We set out to tell the story of this transitional time. At a certain point it would go from a transitional time to true deep dysfunction if we kept them from maturing anymore.”

Of the decision to bring the characters back now, Dunham told Variety, “Right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop… It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”

When does Girls Season 7 premiere?

The premiere date for the new season is not known at this time, but Variety confirmed that production begins in 2027. There will be five new episodes when the series returns.

Who is in the Girls Season 7 cast?

All four of the main original cast members are coming back for Season 7. Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet will be reprising their roles as Hannah Horvath, Marnie Michaels, Jessa Johansson, and Shoshanna Shapiro.

Andrew Rannells is also set to return as Hannah’s gay best friend (and ex-boyfriend), Elijah. More casting information will likely be revealed closer to the premiere date.

Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s on/off love interest, is not on the cast list. Konner is also not involved.

Is there a trailer for Girls Season 7?

There is no trailer yet, but Dunham previously opened up to Variety about where she thinks the characters could be in the present day timeline.

“Shoshanna was married to, then divorced from, the mayor of New York City, and she runs an athleisure startup that’s zero-waste. Marnie — it’s third marriage. She still sings, but I think Marnie really needs to take it to Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous,” she teased.

Dunham continued, “Jessa is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia. Adam (Driver) is a cult theater actor, and he’s probably living in Berlin, and Ray (Alex Karpovsky) is still on city council and running his coffee shop and doing better than anyone. Elijah is the fourth lead on a sitcom, making a good amount of money and still looking for love in all the wrong places.”

As for Hannah, Dunham said, “She teaches at Bard and loves raising her son. She probably has a girlfriend who’s, like, a chef. And she’s less obsessed with being famous. That is where I feel that she would land.”
