What’s Next for ‘Beyond the Gates’ This Fall: Nicole’s Big Twist, Dani in Danger & More
Exclusive
As fall gets underway on Beyond the Gates, creator and head writer Michele Val Jean has big plans for the citizens of Fairmont Crest.
“From the beginning, I’ve let the characters lead me,” she explains. “That’s how I write. I like to come from a character base and let the plot come from that. So that’s what I really focus on and pay attention to — ‘What’s the next thing for this character? What makes sense for this character? What does this character need to shake up their world? They’re getting a little too happy.’ So that is how I approach it, and I just hope that there is a positive response to it.”
The response to the soap, which launched in February 2025, has been nothing short of enthusiastic, something Val Jean still finds surreal. “It blows me away sometimes,” she marvels. “There’s so much work to do, and sometimes it’s hard to unplug and really look at what’s happening and what the show means to people, but when I do, it’s almost overwhelming. I’ve been in this business for so long on other people’s shows, and to have my own is just kind of mind-blowing. I wish my grandmother and my mother were here because they were big soap fans. They would never let me rest without asking me what’s going to happen next.”

Now, Val Jean has another milestone to celebrate: the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, October 30, where Beyond the Gates is in contention for the first time. The show earned 15 nominations, a record showing for a new soap. “The Emmy nominations blew me away, too,” she adds. “I’m so excited for the show. It’s going to be a fun night, win, lose or draw, because so many of the people are coming out for it, whether they’re nominated or not. A bunch of us are going to be there, and it’s just going to be so much fun. I’m really looking forward to that.”
The success of Beyond the Gates is a source of immense pride for Val Jean, but seeing the show become part of the mainstream conversation and make an impact on the genre has been especially rewarding. “There’s a definite buzz about it, and I’m seeing a lot more Black characters in daytime now,” she observes. “This is the first time that we have three Black men in the Supporting Actor category, so I think it’s influencing the genre on a lot of levels. One of the things that it’s done is prove that soaps aren’t dead. It’s a genre that I love, so if I’m influencing it positively in any way with the show, that’s why it means everything to me.”
And Val says there’s plenty more ahead. The show is currently written into April 2027, with new faces set to join the Fairmont Crest community along the way. “As we go down the journey with The Articulettes, that path is going to lead back to [their manager] Dante Green. So, we’re going to be seeing him eventually. It’s not imminent because we write really far in advance, but you’ll be meeting Dante Green. And then we have a female robbery/homicide cop that’s going to come onto the canvas eventually.”
In the meantime, here are some of the stories you can’t miss in the months ahead.
Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis)
“They’re going to steer their family and community through some troubling times. And as always, they’ll really lean on one another as they shoulder the weight of their public lives and private secrets. Anita will get to make exciting moves in her music career as we started to see with The Articulettes, but she’s going to meet with some unexpected obstacles along the way that will test how much she really wants this. Vernon will not be afraid to take serious measures to protect his family and bring down anyone who threatens them.”

Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) and Andre Richardson (Sean Freeman)
“Dani’s going to make a strong effort to steer clear of Bill [Hamilton, Timon Kyle Durrett], but I don’t think he’ll ever really let her go. We’ll certainly see her be tempted with some valid reasons to get reeled into his life again. She’s going to find her marriage and herself in danger and be forced to make some severe decisions. And Andre’s secrets will catch up to him in the worst way possible as Heather [Armstrong, Ashley Jones] closes in to make good on her threats.”
Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnée Duplaix) and Kial Rollins (Greg Vaughan)
“For a while, Nicole was forced to rearrange her life around other people’s actions, mistakes and agendas. But this fall we’ll see her live on her own terms and decide what she wants her future to look like. She’s going to make major strides in her relationship with Kial as the couple continues to blossom and dream about what’s ahead. She’s going to face the life she lost with Ted [Richardson, Keith Robinson] as they both move onto separate paths with other people. And by the end of the year, Nicole’s world will flip completely upside down in a way no one sees coming, including her.”

Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett)
“Bill is going to make some pretty aggressive choices to free himself from Hayley’s [Lawson, Marquita Goings] grip. He’s going to turn to Dani for familial comfort and become accustomed to the bitter taste of regret as he reflects on the life that he destroyed. And he will dig deep into his own history and confront the darkest parts of his past while trying to move forward and see what’s ahead. And little does he know what’s coming.”
Hayley Lawson (Marquita Goings)
“Hayley’s seen some setbacks and deviations from her original black widow plot for Bill, but she’s never been one to give up. This fall, she will be brilliant, beautiful, and cold as ever. She’s definitely not done scheming, and she’s not done with Bill, I’ll tell you that. She’s good at making bad situations work in her best interest, and we’ll get to see her do plenty of it.”

CBS
Bradley “Smitty” Smith (Mike Manning) and Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon)
“After a life of hard-hitting journalism, Smitty himself will become headline news, and he never imagined that he’d be in this position. He’s going to wrestle through a lot of guilt, soul-searching and strategizing in the process of defending himself and everything he holds dear. Martin’s [congressional] campaign is moving full speed ahead as election day approaches, and we’ll get to see how he manages that with what his husband’s going through. And we’ll see them either get closer or be pulled farther apart.”
Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit) and Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges)
“They’re both passionate about their careers and about each other, but this fall they’ll butt heads from the pressure of balancing their roles at work and at home. Jacob will stop at nothing to expose [the criminal] The Impaler and put an end to the bloody trail of danger, deception and death. But justice won’t come without sacrifice.”

Chris Reel / CBS
Ted Richardson (Keith Robinson) and Shanice Johnson (Ernestine Johnson Morrison)
“Despite tests and challenges in their relationship, Ted and Shanice will find their love burning bright as they take steps toward forever. But they’ll eventually find that happily ever afters are hard to come by.”
Vanessa McBride (Lauren Buglioli), Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) and Heather Armstrong (Ashley Jones)
“Vanessa’s loyalty to Joey will come at great personal cost to her family and her safety. Joey will wrestle with the reality that his sister is not who she used to be. And as Heather sinks her teeth further into the community, she’ll go to new despicable lengths for chaos and control, but she may not get the last laugh. You’ll have to watch it.”
