What To Know

  • Jimmy Kimmel discussed Guillermo Rodriguez’s latest success on Dancing With the Stars after he made it through another week.
  • He also defended his sidekick from the online haters.

Guillermo Rodriguez is the ultimate fan favorite on Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars, but along with all the love has also come some hateful comments from those who think he should have been eliminated from the competition by now. Jimmy Kimmel addressed the haters during his October 7 monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“Not everyone is happy for Guillermo and there have been some accusations suggesting that the competition is rigged,” Kimmel noted. “People don’t understand … the competition isn’t rigged. Life is rigged in Guillermo’s favor. He is winning, even though probably half the people voting cannot spell the word Guillermo. You are winning, even though there are haters online trying to bring you down.”

He went on to play some videos and read some tweets from viewers who were hating on Rodriguez and pointed out, “I think some people might be losing sight of what this show is and maybe of their lives overall. This is not the Olympics. This is not SEAL Team 6. There are no responsibilities that go along with winning this.”

Kimmel joked, “Once the winner is crowned, we glue a punch of little mirrors to a piece of $40 styrofoam we brought at Michael’s, and we send them home with it. This is also not a professional dance competition. That’s why it’s called Dancing With the Stars, not Dancing With the Professionals. This is an entertainment show. The winner should be whatever team is most entertaining.”

The audience erupted into applause when Kimmel asked, “In the 21 years of this show, have you ever seen anything more entertaining than this? This is what the show is about!”

He also applauded his sidekick for how hard he’s been working each week. “Dancing does not come naturally to him,” Kimmel explained. “Asking him to do this was like asking a pigeon to do a swim meet. Look at that body. Seriously. Do you see the body of a dancer? No. … And the fact that he has been out there working so hard, rolling around on the floor, sweating, panting, shaking that adorable little ass, dancing like a star … I’ll tell ya, if that bothers you, if that upsets you, if you feel the need to attack him online, to begrudge him even a drop for the gallons of joy he’s bringing to America right now, then maybe you need to get out of your little hate caves and find some friends.”

Kimmel played clips from Rodriguez’s most recent dance, the samba, and joked, “I think you’re the only dancer who ever spent more time rolling on the floor than dancing on it. I think the audience thought you fainted. You look like a teddy bear and the batteries went dead.”

Rodriguez, of course, took the jokes in stride, even telling his boss, “Jimmy, it was so comfortable, I didn’t want to get up.”
