‘Chicago Fire’ Preview Reveals Tension Between Severide & Kidd

What To Know

  • In Chicago Fire‘s latest preview, Severide faces new challenges and tension with his wife, Kidd.
  • As he adjusts to his responsibilities as captain, both will need to navigate their evolving leadership roles.

Before leaving (again), Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) warned Severide (Taylor Kinney) that his decisions have potential to blow back on all of 51 now that he’s captain, making sure he knew that was a huge responsibility, one the firehouse’s former battalion chief knew he was capable of but stressed he had to be willing to take on. Now, in Chicago Fire Season 15 Episode 2, airing Wednesday, October 14, it looks like Severide adjusting to that part of the position is going to lead to some tension, at least on the job, with his wife, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

In the promo, which you can watch above, Severide tells Kidd, “I can’t always say yes to you.” Her response? “Copy that, captain.” Uh-oh.

In the premiere, Kidd told Severide that Pascal had a point, but her husband said he couldn’t become a different person now that he’s in that office. She knew that but pointed out that he couldn’t be afraid to evolve, neither of them could (she’s now training the candidates) with the additional weight they’re now carrying.

Showrunner Victor Teran told TV Insider after the premiere that it won’t be easy for Severide to find the balance in his new position. “I think it’s going to be a rocky road, and I think it’s going to come with some interesting revelations about himself,” he teased. “He and Kidd will have to figure it out together because she’s on a leadership trajectory of her own, and I think those two things are really going to play off each other. So it’s going to be fun and interesting.”

After all, Severide’s “dealing with a lot of change,” including with one of his Squad members, Cruz (Joe Miñoso), out after fracturing his spine on a call, Teran continued. “Severide is a guy who is always in command, and right now his world has been shaken up to the point where he’s now been pushed out of his comfort zone, and we haven’t seen that in a really long time. And he’s a different person than he was the last time he was taken out of his comfort zone. And so he’ll have a different set of reactions.”

Elsewhere in the video preview, we get a glimpse at one of the upcoming calls, plus Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente) gets into it with one of the candidates, Burke (Da’Vinchi), in the locker room.

Larracuente did tell TV Insider that he’d be clashing with one of the candidates. “I feel like this season, Vasquez tends to forget that he was once in their shoes last year. He maybe was not new to firefighting, but he was new to the house. So I think that’s something that he has to constantly check himself and remind himself, put yourself in their shoes, you were once them,” he shared. “Because sometimes he can be a bit judgmental, especially when somebody has opposing views on firefighting than him. So there’s going to be some tension for sure.”

As for what else is coming up in this episode, titled “Rattle Cage,” NBC teases, “Violet [Hanako Greensmith] and Novak [Jocelyn Hudon] grow suspicious of a mental health facility after treating an escaped patient. Severide feels heat coming down from HQ.”

It’s only the first episode and Stella is just grating on my nerves. They need to tone her down a bit. Its Chicago Fire, not the Stella show!
