‘Chicago Med’ Boss Previews Sharon’s Fight for Her Job: ‘S**t’s Going to Get Real’
Fall Preview
What To Know
- Sharon Goodwin faces a major battle to keep her job at Gaffney after being accused of leaking personnel files when Chicago Med returns for Season 12 on October 7.
- Showrunner Allen MacDonald teases what’s next in that fight.
Gaffney isn’t Gaffney without Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson). But she has to fight to keep her job when Chicago Med returns for its 12th season on Wednesday, October 7.
Last season ended with Sharon being accused of leaking the files of Dr. Theo Rabari (Manish Dayal), who’d been coming for Dr. Charles’ (Oliver Platt) job. Miranda (Orlagh Cassidy) was ready to fire her, but Sharon refused to just back down and argued she couldn’t do so without the board’s approval. Season 12 has to not only address Sharon’s future at the hospital but also who leaked those files — because when Charles checked that she didn’t do so to save his job, she didn’t answer him.
When TV Insider caught up with showrunner Allen MacDonald, we of course had to ask about what Sharon’s fight to keep her job looks like. “You can’t print it,” he said with a laugh.

“The answer s**t’s going to get real. In the finale last year, Miranda wanted her to resign. And what we find out now three months later is that Sharon has not resigned. She’s trying to fight, but she’s losing and Miranda has all the cards. And rather than be suspended or resign, what Sharon elected to do was take a voluntary paid leave. And in that time she’s been replaced by Mallory Sloan [Rebecca Breeds], who’s filling in right now and perhaps permanently,” he teased.
He continued, “I think that what we’re going to see is that Goodwin has a big fight ahead of her with Miranda to get her job back. And I will say that she has a very unique way of fighting back that you’ll see in Episode 2.”
In the premiere, titled “Shots Fired,” NBC teases, “Gunshots at a wedding lead to chaos in the E.D. Goodwin defends herself under threat of being fired. Hannah [Jessy Schram] makes a decision while on maternity leave.”
