Will There Be a ‘Lanterns’ Season 2?

With Lanterns nearing the end of its first season, one big question is already looming: Will there be a Season 2?

The Season 1 finale airs Sunday, October 4, on HBO and streams on HBO Max, bringing the first chapter of the Green Lantern drama to a close. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the series as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively, two Green Lanterns drawn into a murder mystery that uncovers a much larger conspiracy stretching from small-town America to the far reaches of the Green Lantern Corps. Pierre is next set to reprise his role as John in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow.

HBO has yet to officially renew Lanterns for a second season, but there are already signs that the story could continue. So, what do we know about the show’s future? Here’s everything we know so far about a potential Lanterns Season 2.

Will there be a Lanterns Season 2?

HBO and DC Studios have not officially renewed Lanterns for a second season yet.

There are rumors that the Season 2 writers’ room has reportedly been assembled under showrunner Chris Mundy, signaling strong studio confidence following the viewership success.

However, according to Nexus Point News, showrunner Mundy is expected to lead the room, with Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly joining the writing staff. Baden Kelly, who wrote Season 1 episodes “Trust Fall” and “OutKast,” is the only Season 1 writer besides Mundy returning to the room.

Despite this report, Season 2 is still not a guarantee.

What is Lanterns about?

Warning: Spoilers for Lanterns Season 1 Episodes 1 – 7 ahead! Lanterns unfolds across multiple timelines, beginning in 2016, when veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is tasked with training new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Their investigation takes them to Rushville, Nebraska, and the powerful Macon family. A decade later, Hal is dead, and John is trying to solve his murder with help from a digital version of his former partner known as the Hal-ogram.

The mystery stretches back to Zoe Macon (Poorna Jagannathan), wife of wealthy rancher William Macon (Garret Dillahunt). Zoe is actually the last surviving Manhunter, a synthetic being created by the Guardians who has been hiding on Earth. After Zoe used alien technology to cure William’s cancer, he built a militia and network of alien detectors to protect her.

When Zoe’s past catches up with her, Rushville becomes a battleground. John ultimately kills Zoe, but the confrontation leaves the town devastated and changes Hal, John, and Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) forever. In 2026, the mystery remains: Who killed Hal Jordan?

Who will star in Lanterns Season 2?
