‘GMA’ Reportedly Set for Big Shakeup After Ratings Loss to ‘Today’

ABC News is reportedly considering major changes at Good Morning America after the show dropped behind NBC’s Today in the ratings battle for the 2025-2026 season.

According to the New York Post, network sources say a significant shakeup could be coming in light of the ratings news. For the 25-26 season, GMA averaged 2.8 million viewers and 477,000 viewers in the key Adults 25-54 demographic, per Nielsen figures. This was below Today, which amassed 2.9 million total viewers and 612,000 demo viewers.

It marked the first time since the 2011-12 season that GMA wasn’t at the No. 1 spot. While there are mitigating circumstances, such as Today‘s boost from NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage and public interest in cohost Savannah Guthrie‘s missing mother, there is still said to be concern behind the scenes at ABC News.

One ABC source told the Post that a big reason for the drop in numbers is that GMA cohosts Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, and George Stephanopoulos are rarely on set at the same time. “Someone is always on vacation” or on “assignment,” the alleged insider stated.

“Anchors are the No. 1 reason people watch,” the source added. “Anchor chemistry is everything, but Robin and George detest each other and Robin is jealous of Michael. It’s palpable. They don’t like each other.”

The person continued, “They can’t afford to keep all those anchors. They’re going to need to cut their salaries significantly — and no one wants to take a pay cut.”

However, another source told the outlet that the trio is “the longest-running anchor team, and they’re the best at what they do, and it shows.”

Two other network insiders said big changes could be coming as ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic is “very concerned” and “very hands-on” with GMA. One of those changes could be the axing of executive producer Simone Swink.

“I have heard Simone is in trouble,” one source claimed.

Another insider, however, disagreed, saying, “[Swink] holds one of the most respected and important roles at the network and is the best person to lead the show.”

Others pointed to sponsor-driven content driving away viewers. “There’s too much Disney synergy. Too much commercialization,” the source said. “I hate to say it, I love the show, but it’s unwatchable now, and it’s unrecognizable.”
