‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’: Paul Wesley on Playing Prince Dashing in Fairytale Episode

Is this the start of a La’an (Christina Chong) and Kirk (Paul Wesley) romance on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds? The fairytale episode, the penultimate of Season 4, certainly seems to start them on that path, with it ending with the two getting drinks and dancing on board the Enterprise.
“I don’t want to spill the beans too much, but yeah, it is actually [complicated],” Paul Wesley tells TV Insider. “A lot of people are rooting for Kirk and La’an, so I think we’ll be exploring that a bit.”
The episode sees La’an posing as her fairytale doppelgänger, a princess, opposite Kirk’s double, Prince Dashing — just add it to the list of characters Wesley’s played on this show, including different versions of the future captain — and in doing so, she opens up to him about a necklace from her father, something she hadn’t told anyone previously. For Chong, her character could do so for one simple reason: “He looked like Kirk.” That’s also what leads to the episode’s ending for the pair.

She continues, “I think it was Prince Dashing who helped her. He was essentially Kirk to her. And so I think it was just the way he reminded her of Kirk, and that’s why then after the mission, she was like, ‘OK, I need to see if this can also be real life and not just fantasy.'”
But filming those “fantasy” scenes were a lot of fun, Wesley raves.
“Oh my God, it was just so silly. I loved it. Star Trek is such a deeply imaginative show and Strange New Worlds is no exception. It was a total obviously fantasy world departure, and frankly, we just wanted to have fun with it,” he says. “This was La’an’s episode of really understanding herself. Obviously, she comes from a very specific family history, and I think she needs to understand who she is, and this was symbolic of that in a fantastical way. And Dashing was this incredibly earnest hero, but deeply, deeply silly. And we all just got to have fun and use our imaginations, and I had a blast. I had a blast shooting that episode.”
