Mayim Bialik Hits Back at ‘Big Bang Theory’ Fans Who Didn’t Want Her in Spinoff

Mayim Bialik is hitting back after seeing comments from Big Bang Theory fans who didn’t want her to appear in the show’s spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

The actress, who played Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory from 2010 to 2019, recently spoke with Us Weekly about reprising her role for the HBO Max spinoff, which centers on Kevin Sussman‘s character, comic book store owner Stuart Bloom. In the spinoff, Bialik resurfaces as a very different version of her Big Bang character Amy.

“I’ve had a very, very positive relationship of being accepted into the larger Big Bang Theory community. The funniest thing was when it was announced that Stuart was coming back and that some of The Big Bang Theory characters might make an appearance,” Bialik said.

She continued, “I would text Melissa [Rauch] because sometimes I would read the comment sections and it was like, ‘Please God, let it not be Amy.’ Or other ones would be like, ‘Please God, let it not be … .'”

Bialik said she brushed the comments off and didn’t let them affect her personally. “Everyone had their preference of who they didn’t want to see on Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and so I just got a good laugh out of that,” she recalled.

“Like you cannot please all of the audience any of the time,” she continued. “Hopefully, people who were happy to see at least these characters come back — hopefully they were pleased with this season.”

The Big Bang Theory premiered in 2007 and revolved around a group of scientist friends and their partners. The show starred Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Rauch. Bialik first joined as a guest star in Season 3 before being promoted to the main cast starting in Season 4.

Since ending its run in 2019 after 12 seasons and 279 episodes, the show spawned two spinoffs: Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe marks the third spinoff.

“There had obviously been a lot of buzz around the show, and the Chuck Lorre world is notoriously private, which I think you know makes it all the more fun when I found out what was happening,” Bialik said about the latest spinoff. “There had been whispers [about me returning]. These were things that were floating in the ether, but everyone was pretty tight-lipped about it.”

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follows Stuart after he accidentally damages a device Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard created, resulting in a “multiverse Armageddon” where he encounters alternate versions of himself and his friends.

“The fact that I got asked to be part of it was really, really special,” Bialik stated. “Honestly I would have been happy to do anything to be involved and to be supportive. The fact that I got to create these different versions of Amy in this multiverse was kind of a bonus.”

The former Jeopardy! host added, “It’s nice not to be asked to have to recreate the job you had when you were 35. So it’s also nice that there is some flexibility in the identity that we got to create.”
