‘The Paper’: Why Ned & Mare’s Retreat Looks So Familiar in Season 2

The Paper‘s latest season is sharing a bit of a comedy crossover with another popular series in the episode “Weekend Ned,” during which Ned (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mare (Chelsea Frei) attempt to have a romantic retreat getaway at the same filming location as Prime Video‘s Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat.

While The Paper may take place in Toledo, Ohio, filming for the series is based out of Los Angeles, and so Ned and Mare’s romantic retreat was filmed at Oak Canyon Ranch, which also served as the primary filming spot for Company Retreat, according to star Alex Bonifer, who took to social media to reveal he’d actually had a role that was cut from the episode.

For those who may not recall, Company Retreat saw a group of actors pose as a family-owned hot sauce company as they interacted with hired temp Anthony Norman to see how he’d handle different scenarios they’d set up in the hopes of highlighting his positivity. In that scenario, Bonifer portrayed Dougie, the son of the company’s owner, who was poised to take over until a secondary party expressed interest in taking it over.

On Instagram stories, Bonifer posted a couple of photos with information about his cut part, writing, “I was in an episode of The Paper but my scenes were cut have the best Thursday ever!!!” alongside an image of himself standing next to his trailer on set.

Bonifer shared a second image of the location, adding, “And a very fun fact. My episode was shot at Oak Canyon Ranch where we filmed Company Retreat. And my characters room was… Dougie’s room where I lived while we filmed Company Retreat.

While fans may not have been able to meet Bonifer’s character, whose name appears to be Taylor based on the trailer tag, it’s a fun piece of TV trivia to know that the episode was filmed in the same spot as another hilarious show.
