‘Widow’s Bay’ Star Dale Dickey Says She’s Hollywood’s ‘Most Wrinkled Woman’
What To Know
- Dale Dickey, 64, is proudly embracing her wrinkles and aging.
- She focuses on enjoying life and activities she loves, rather than obsessing over looks.
- Dickey recently received her first Emmy nomination for her role in Widow’s Bay.
Dale Dickey turns 65 on September 29, and she is embracing the aging process gracefully, happily describing herself as “the most wrinkled woman in Hollywood.”
The Widow’s Bay star spoke with People at the Celebrating Women of Emmy Season red carpet in Los Angeles, on September 10, where she opened up about being an actress in her mid-60s. She said the best thing about being her age is “being comfortable with the fact that I’m one of the most… well, the most wrinkled woman in Hollywood.”
“I have a weathered face, and it’s what I have. And I love it,” she added. “There’s something about being this age where it just doesn’t matter. I don’t give a s*** anymore.”
Dickey, whose credits include My Name Is Earl, Justified, and Bookie, admitted that she wasn’t always so laid-back about her looks. During her high school days, she revealed she had a “deep insecurity” when dealing with her weight or acne. Those insecurites stuck with her for a while.
“‘I’m not pretty enough,'” she recalled feeling. “And I spent years not pretty enough… back then, it stung. But my mom thought I was pretty. My husband makes me feel beautiful.”
Dickey told the outlet that instead of obsessing over her appearance, she focuses on the things she enjoys, like swimming. “Life is, you really realize you’re still very young,” she stated. “I hope. I mean, I hope I have much longer!”
While Dickey has worked as a character actor in film and television since the 1990s, she gained new recognition this year for her role as Rosemary, the deadpan town hall employee in the Apple TV horror-comedy hit Widow’s Bay. Her performance earned her her first-ever Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
“The awards thing is never really first on my mind,” she recently told Variety. “I’m a team player, and I’ve been a supporting actor off and on for so long. It’s just not something that I thought was ever sort of in my realm.”
However, Dickey said she appreciates the recognition, especially at this stage of her career. “It’s sweeter coming at this point in my career. Had it come when I was younger, I would have run away. It would have been too much,” she shared. “Now I’m older, more settled, and it’s like, okay, this will be fun. I can go to the party and enjoy myself.”
