  • She will serve under Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the Trump administration.
  • McHenry’s media career includes a high-profile sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News that ended in a confidential settlement.

Britt McHenry, the former ESPN reporter who once sued Fox News for sexual harassment, has landed a role in President Donald Trump‘s US Department of State.

McHenry announced on Wednesday (September 9) that she has been appointed press advisor to the diplomatic agency and will work under Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She posted the news on X alongside a photo of herself by the official seal in the Press Briefing Room at the White House.

“It is true,” McHenry wrote. “I am honored to serve as a newly appointed press advisor to the State Department, our country’s highest diplomatic institution. Proud to serve for and work alongside some truly incredible people.”

She expanded on the new position in a LinkedIn post, writing, “I am beyond excited to start this new chapter today and am thankful to every person who helped me in pursuing and achieving this opportunity. For 17 years, I have worked on camera covering the news. Now, I get to take that experience and apply it to our country’s highest diplomatic agency.”

“As a fellow Floridian, I have followed and admired Secretary Marco Rubio’s political career from its inception to the outstanding leadership he shows today in the Administration,” she added. “He has appointed an exceptional staff, and I look forward to serving them and our nation.”

McHenry’s media career has been surrounded by controversies. She spent three years at ESPN as a Washington DC-based reporter before being let go in 2017 in mass company layoffs. While at the network, she was suspended in 2015 after video footage emerged of her unleashing a tirade at a tow company worker. McHenry later apologized for her outburst.

After leaving ESPN, McHenry pivoted into the right-wing political space, often appearing as a commentator on Fox Nation. The relationship with the network broke down after McHenry filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News co-host George ‘Tyrus’ Murdoch in 2019.

McHenry accused the former WWE wrestler turned political pundit of sending her sexually explicit messages. When she complained to Fox Nation executive Jennifer Rauchet, McHenry claimed she was told she was “replaceable.”

Murdoch denied the allegations, and in 2021, the lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed by both parties after they reached a confidential settlement.

“I am very proud to have stood up for my rights and hope that I have empowered other women to do the same,” McHenry told Deadline at the time of the settlement. “Although I fully stand by the truth of my allegations, I am pleased to put this matter behind me and move forward with my career.”

Correction: A previous version of this article referred to McHenry as a Fox News reporter.
