Curry died on August 25 after battling significant health issues for more than a decade. The actor suffered a stroke in 2012 that left him with mobility issues. As recently as last year, Curry was still unable to walk and used a wheelchair.

While making a rare appearance at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry spoke to the crowd about his health issue and how he became incapacitated. “I was having a massage at the time, and I didn’t even actually notice anything, but the guy who was doing the massage said, ‘I’m worried about you. I think I want to call an ambulance.’ And he did, and I said, ‘That’s so silly,’” recalled Curry. “They put me in an ambulance, and a very nice paramedic said, ‘I’m going to give you morphine.’ And I said, ‘Bring it on.'”

“I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair.”

Curry was best known for his theatricality and iconic portrayals in beloved movies and cult classic films, including evil scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pennywise the Clown in 1990’s It, butler Wadsworth in 1985’s Clue, evil incarnate Darkness in 1985’s Legend, and Long John Silver in 1996’s The Muppet Treasure Island, just to name a few.
