Hannity Abruptly Ends Interview During Argument Over Democratic Candidate

Sean Hannity abruptly ended an interview with Bill de Blasio on Thursday (August 13) after the former New York City Mayor pushed back against the host’s attacks on Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson.

The pair were discussing the Maine Senate race on Hannity’s eponymous show on Thursday when Hannity interrupted de Blasio to say, “I gotta go.” This came as De Blasio was defending Jackson amid reports from Fox News that highlighted a newly surfaced police report about an incident Jackson was involved in when he was 19.

Jackson, who was chosen to replace the disgraced Graham Platner on the ballot, told Fox News Digital, “Nearly 40 years ago, when I was 19 years old, I got into a fight with another man. I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now.”

“This guy is your worst nightmare politically, Sean,” de Blasio said on Thursday’s show, per Mediaite. “He’s a lumberjack. He’s a Catholic guy from Northern Maine who fought for working people. He’s gonna win that race.”

Hannity interjected, saying, “Did you read the story that there’s the accusation he threw a bottle at a woman and has a vile temper? Maybe you don’t follow Maine politics.”

The host was referencing a New York Times report from last month, which said that Jackson threw a half-empty water bottle during a tense showdown with then-state Sen. Heather Sanborn. Witnesses claimed that the bottle was not directly aimed at Sanborn, nor did it strike her or anyone else. However, some said Sanborn left shaken and in tears. Jackson later apologized.

De Blasio was having none of it, though he seemed to think Hannity was still addressing the police report story. “Are you kidding me that you’re talking about at 19, he hit a guy, and that’s your reason the guy shouldn’t be in the U.S. Senate?” he stated.

Hannity chose not to argue further, telling his guest, “Alright, I gotta go.”

“He’s gonna win in Maine, and it’s gonna change everything, Sean,” de Blasio continued as music played to wrap up the segment.

As noted by Mediaite, the interview was approaching the 10-minute mark, meaning Hannity may have needed to wrap things up regardless. However, that didn’t stop viewers from sounding off on social media about Hannity’s behavior.

Another added, “That sudden attempt to end the interview says a lot. When tough questions come back the other way, the conversation seems to get a lot shorter.”

One user referred to him as “Hard Break Hannity,” saying, “Whenever someone’s about to not be Alan Colmes/ roll over and play dead for him he’s suddenly up against a hard break.”

“What choice does he have? His lies were exposed and all he’s got left is to head for the nearest exit,” said another.

“He clicks his pen when he’s in trouble. He did it with Oliver Larkin. That’s his tell,” one commenter added.
