The undead have risen, and they’re running amok in Riverdale. And we are not talking about Jingle-Jangle.

Over a decade after its comic book debut and almost a year after first being announced as a television project, Disney+ has officially given a series order to the landmark horror comic Afterlife with Archie. Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, the fan-favorite title will be adapted as an hour-long horror drama, with the streamer targeting a Halloween 2027 premiere.

According to Deadline, the pickup comes nine months after the project landed at Disney+ with a rare script-to-series commitment. The series hails from Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti‘s Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television, where both Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti are under overall deals. The adaptation marks the latest live-action take on the Archie Comics universe, but with a decidedly darker twist, reimagining the wholesome town of Riverdale as the setting for a full-scale zombie apocalypse.

Aguirre-Sacasa, the showrunner behind both CW’s Riverdale and Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will executive produce the series with Jimmy Gibbons. He was named the chief creative officer of Archie Comics in March 2014 after overseeing two of its most successful titles: Afterlife with Archie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is credited with reviving the brand by steering its characters in bold new directions.

Here is everything we know about the series so far.

When will Afterlife with Archie premiere?

Afterlife with Archie is aiming for a Halloween 2027 premiere on Disney+, where it will debut as an hour-long horror drama.

What is Afterlife with Archie about?

First published in 2013, Afterlife with Archie reimagines the classic comic book as Riverdale is suddenly overrun by the living dead. The chaos begins after Sabrina the Teenage Witch attempts to resurrect Jughead Jones’ dog, Hotdog, after an accident, but the pooch returns as a zombie and bites his master, setting off a chain reaction that sparks a full-blown zombie apocalypse. Soon, Archie and his friends are forced into unthinkable choices, as they execute teachers, parents, and classmates to survive, all while their familiar teen dramas play out against the backdrop of horror.

The comic ran for 10 issues, but failed to provide an adequate ending for readers after it went on hiatus in 2016. The story ended on a cliffhanger with Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the survivors still fleeing the zombie apocalypse.
