What To Know

  • Bill Maher described Donald Trump has a “certain type of mental disorder.”
  • Maher recounted Trump’s bluntness in public interactions and suggested this behavior emerges when Trump feels attacked or uncomfortable.
  • Despite backlash for dining with Trump, Maher defended engaging with the president, arguing that Trump needs more critics in his circle to challenge his views and decisions.

More than a year after meeting President Donald Trump for dinner at the White House — a year in which he and Trump have continued a war of words — Bill Maher is giving his take on the POTUS’s personality.

“He’s so more self-aware than he lets on in public,” Maher said in a new episode of NPR’s Newsmakers. “Absolutely. So much more self-aware, not belligerent. And by the way, everybody who meets him says the same thing.”

But the Real Time pundit also said Trump “is a crazy person” because he “blurts out whatever is on his mind often.”

He went on: “It’s funny, [Trump is] both, at the same time, the most full of s*** person and also the most honest. You know, I saw him … doing an interview very much like this recently with somebody, and he didn’t like something she said, and he just went, ‘You’re a terrible person.’”

(Maher may have been referring to Trump’s response to ABC News’ Mary Bruce questioning him about the Epstein files at a White House press conference. In that moment, Trump told Bruce, “You’re a terrible person and a terrible reporter.”)

“Now, that’s just not how we act,” Maher added. “Even though, to be honest, I’ve thought that. … But just, there is something different about the mind that does that. Yeah, he just speaks his interior monologue, which is just, you know, that is a certain type of mental disorder. But it seems to come out when he feels in any way attacked, which is, like, outside of his comfort zone.”

In the Newsmakers interview, Maher also addressed the backlash to his unexpected dinner with Trump.

“Nobody has been harder on Donald Trump,” Maher claimed. “That’s why the dinner happened to begin with. It was sort of a Nixon to China thing, you know? Let’s just talk to each other instead of hurling insults. Well, he’s back to hurling assaults because I never once changed my tune when I got back to work. I [never] said I would.”

And in Maher’s mind, the president needs more critics in his milieu. “He’s got a lot of friends, you know?” the comedian explained. “He doesn’t read the briefing books. He does everything by ‘People are saying…’ Be one of the people saying. Be one of those people who talk to him. Because he does look you in the eye and listen, and he does change his mind sometimes because he has no fixed beliefs. They need more people like this, me, talking to them, not less.”

Conservatives love to talk about Joe and his issues. It's also pretty clear the DJT mental train isn't quite on the track as well. Six years later still thinks he won but everything including the evidence shows he lost. Thinking his v.p. could somehow wave a magic wand and help then 45 stay in power. Canada, Gulf of America and Guardians of the Strait. Remember, this is the guy with his finger on the button making decisions that affect us all. Maher is right about him and his personality. Unfortunately, Trump is also a guy trying to make coffee with the toaster. Too say that's a problem for us and now the world is an understatement..

Yeah but Joe has been senile for over a decade after 2 brain surgeries and campaigned from a basement. He literally talks to dead people

With the nutty things DJT says and does wouldn't surprise me in the least if he did the same.

Oh duh, do you really think so. Are you just coming on board with something people have known for at least 10 years. The best thing that could have happened to this country is if Trump fell down that escalator.

Bill Maher believes people actually value his opinion because he is rich and famous. He is a comedian who used to be funny, then became bloated with feelings of self-importance. Trump is an absolute sociopath, and Maher is not qualified to assess that. I’ve worked with sociopaths and they can display indications of self-awareness. That does not make them normal in any way. For Maher to think that people will change Donald Trump, just look at Melania Trump as Exhibit A, an example of a wife who thought she would change him. Exhibit B: just look at the longest list of Presidential Advisors in US history who have quit working with him after thinking they could advise him and get him to listen. Trump has been an emotionally stunted, stubborn, narcissistic sociopath since his parents gave up on him at the age of 13 and sent him away to New York Military Academy next to West Point due to incorrigible behavior. You would think that after SEVENTY YEARS of the same kinds of sociopathic behaviors, some people would get a clue that this guy is not normal and will never be normal. A lot of people’s problems in assessing him is that they think they are going to get rich by hanging round with or voting for someone who is rich. Ask the people who have served time in prison for defending him. I know his former chef Aaron Fuller and Allen Weisselberg, his former chief developer of all new businesses projects: hotels, golf courses, housing, restaurants. Allen said Trump did not do anything.
