What To Know

  • Bill Maher has shifted his outlook on Democrats’ chances in the 2026 midterm elections.
  • He cites recent Supreme Court rulings on voting rights, gerrymandering, and the election of far-left Democratic Socialists in New York as factors.
  • Maher previously predicted Democrats would win easily.

Bill Maher just changed his tune on Democrats’ chances of winning during the 2026 midterm elections.

While in Washington, D.C., to accept the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center, the Real Time With Bill Maher host, 70, pointed out how much had changed since he said of Democrats, “Even they can’t blow it,” on his Club Random podcast.

“You see how quickly the news changes in just two months,” Maher told The Hill’s In The Know blog. “Because that was before the Supreme Court made a ruling on voting rights, before a number of districts have already gerrymandered their voting districts.”

The stand-up comedian added, “So that has changed just in the last two months. And then the Democrats just elected three very far-left Democratic Socialists in New York who are crazy. Like outright, really crazy.”

Maher was referring to the Democratic socialist House candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez winning their primary elections after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed them. Brad Lander (a former Democratic Socialists of America member) also won the Democratic primary for New York’s 10th Congressional District.

“So how are they going to blow it?” Maher wondered aloud. “I don’t know, but they seem to be well on their way.”

In January, Maher made the complete opposite prediction about midterms amid ICE raids in Minnesota.

“My prediction is this stuff, your party is going to get the dog s*** kicked out of you in the midterms,” he told U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana. “Because this is not what people voted for, and they’re going to hold the party responsible, as they should.”

How do you think the midterm elections will play out? Do you think Maher is right in his new prediction?

I stopped listening to what Maher had to say years ago. I think he's mentally ill. Maybe from too much pot.
