Alert: Missing Persons Unit just delivered its most shocking episode yet.
The Fox drama killed off its female lead, Nikki (Dania Ramirez), in the April 1 episode. Mob boss Charlie McGannon (Ian Tracey) had her kidnapped, then killed her, because she was going to meet with the FBI about all his bad deeds over the years. But what he didn’t know is that Nikki had evidence to ensure that he’d be arrested. Ramirez’s last episode was the Season 3 premiere, the episode that aired one week prior to this one.
Below, executive producer and showrunner Carla Kettner, via email, explains the decision to kill off Nikki and teases what’s ahead.
What went into the decision to write out Dania and kill off Nikki and in the way that you did?
Carla Kettner: The biggest factor was our commitment to keeping the show fresh and surprising. We had kind of played out the love triangle dynamic between Nikki, Jason [Scott Caan], and Mike [Ryan Broussard], which was such a great part of Seasons 1 and 2. So the question became: What circumstance would most challenge our MPU team? Losing the person they all most depended on — Nikki — was the answer. We had planted the seeds very early on with our exploration of Nikki’s relationship with Irish mob boss Charlie McGannon. Making Charlie responsible for Nikki’s ultimate death, and having Nikki still get him in the end, was the best way to honor Nikki’s heroism.
How are we going to see this affecting the team, specifically Jason, Mike, and Kemi (Adeola Role), going forward? How are they handling their grief?
We wanted their grief process to feel real, which means that it echoes all the way through Season 3, culminating in another shocking turn at the end of the season. Same as in real life, each of our core three handle the death differently and in ways that feel authentic. Mike tries to bury himself in work, avoiding his pain, which of course doesn’t work. Jason, who doesn’t run from anything, deals with the grief head on, and that gives us a whole new window into his character. Kemi, the spiritual heart of MPU, tries to help the boys through her pain, but then in a great scene with Helen [Diana Bang] really comes apart. Most important, the shared grief brings the team closer together.
Who’s going to be leading the team now? How much of a role will Bill Houston (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) play in that capacity? A temporary or permanent one?
Just like Nikki’s death upended our personal dynamics, it also throws a massive wrench into leadership of MPU. Mike gets the chance to take over the Captain’s chair. Bill Houston steps in temporarily because he has a soft spot for MPU. And finally Megalyn Echikunwoke (Lieutenant Bennett) tries to fill the seat and learns that this team may be amazing at what they do, but holy crap, they’re a handful. As for who ultimately takes over — stay tuned for Season 4!

I am not happy about this at all!!! I truly loved this show, and was so excited when it started back up. I always got a kick out of Nikki being the one both men were very obviously crazy about. And I loved the theme. But Jason Grant was always respectful of her being in love with the one she was going to marry. My husband accepted the fact that she’d been killed, but I didn’t believe until I had no choice!! In my opinion, killing her off was a very bad idea!!!!!!

Killing Nikki off was a terrible move. Her and Mike just got back from their honeymoon. Mike waited along time to marry Nikki. The dynamic between Jason and Mike because of Nikki was always fun to watch. I was really looking forward to see how they acted now that Mike and Nikki were married. Poor choice on the shows part. You should have left well enough alone. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Very bad decision on their part. Even though I love the other actors, I am done with the show. Am I'm sure that they've lost alot of other viewers as well. They should have thought about this decision long and hard before making it. Unless, it was her decision to leave. Hopefully, the show doesn't go under.

I would love for Nikki to be in the Witness Protection Program, but she would never allow another innocent person to be her decoy, & get killed. What happened to her & Jason's daughter, she was never mentioned in the episode.

This show originally caught my attention because Dania played a lead role. I really like Scott Caan, but let's face it: he's simply playing the same character he has before, just in a different situation. All in all, I feel that it was a very bad decision to kill off Nikki.
On the other hand, it will be a treat to see Megalyn Echikunwoke in a series again. She is delightful!

This makes me so angry. I really enjoyed this show but not sure if I'll keep watching. To see a BIPOC woman in charge was amazing but also important. This just feels like another case of fridging. They want to push the storyline of the "men" in her life so they kill her. So tired of it.

I was absolutely shocked when I realized the main character, Nikki, had been killed! She’s the glue that holds this show together! Dania Ramirez is such a wonderful actress. The way her character was killed was ridiculous! There’s no way that I’m going to continue watching this show without her in it. It’s just not going to be the same. You people made a horrible mistake in my opinion. Judging by the other comments, I’m not alone.

Right?!? If they had to pick one of the three main characters it would have made more sense for it to be Mike. The story could still go on and they could find another love triangle or protagonist.
Its like when they killed of Elizabeth in The Blacklist. That last season was pointless and I didnt even make it to the 3 episode, what was the point without Elizabeth?

Here's what I think is going to happen: they left us a hint that we'll be in for a shocking twist at the end of the season, I picked up on some of those hints and clues during that episode. I think that it was all a set up to get Charlie, staged the kidnap and the hand with wedding ring sticking out of the dirt, they didn't show her face when she was grabbed behind in her car, didn't show her face on the security camera, she staged it all to get Charlie, went into protective custody, I think the plan is to bring her back, that's what I think and believe, all the clues to me were pretty obvious, I have seen other shows who have done this and ended up bringing the character back, so I'm not giving up on the show just yet, buckle up everyone, it's gonna be a wild ride of a season

I think this was a terrible idea. The story was about her missing son, there was no evidence that they found anything from the remains found in the lake. How can you kill off the main person of the story she started the unit because of her missing son. Now she will never know. And the pour boy if he is still alive will never see his mom again. Killing off another woman in charge..poor choice. I hope she is just doing a fake out and she is really alive.

This was the dumbest thing ever...why couldn't you just have Nikki not return from their honeymoon and be pregnant and want to just be a stay at home mom...killing her off all of sudden was just wrong wrong wrong, what's the show going to be like without Nikki's passion to find every lost or missing person, and the team dynamics was so unique it existed no where else, and was the most awesome thing ever... a strong woman, incharge of a team that consists of her wonderful huband, her really cool ex husband and her spiritually connected lead investigator which is really a family thats an amazing team...talking about keeping the show alive, you just killed it by killing Nikki.

Stupid move. How is killing her off the only way to move the plot forward? As if a woman’s purpose in the show is only because of a love triangle? That’s so insulting. She was great in the show and they could’ve thought of 1000 other sort of plot points and character shifts. This is very disturbing. I don’t even know if I’ll ever watch it again.

I don't think I'll continue watching after this terrible decision. One of the things I liked best about this show was the great dynamic between Nikki, Mike, and Jason. Kemi and Helen are so great in their roles, too, but nah. It's ruined now. Killing Nikki off so soon was the wrong choice.

I'm hoping that Malcolm Jamal Warner sticks around on Alert because he is a breath of fresh air. So much better than the role he was playing on 911. I'm all for the change, BUT I still believe that Nikki's not really dead. I just hope there's a way to have them both on Alert in the future!

If the reason for killing off Nikki is to keep it fresh and the story line with the 3 of them had gone as far as it could, then seems to me a better decision would have been to get new writers. Show will not be same and I am not sure I will continue to watch. What were you thinking?!?!?

I thought the feds orchestrated her death and she would be coming back in a later episode. If that’s not the case I have to move on. I am angry this show wasted my time. If this was an all male cop show the main character would not have died or been killed off so early. I was happy to see a successful cop show with a woman leading without the extra drama.

The network story is a bunch of BS. Anyone noticed that you couldn’t even see Nikki‘s face throughout this episode? Either they fired the actress or she quit. Because she wasn’t even actually in the episode. If this was a planned farewell episode, we wouldn’t have been stuck with a bunch of blurry far away scenes of Nikki, the back of her head, and her hand sticking out of a tail light hole (lucky it was a 1980s car she was kidnapped in!)I think something happened last minute, and the producers recorded that scene at the regatta And inserted it at the end of episode one. It felt so tacked on at the time, and now I know why. Because they realized they were going to have to kill her off in the very next episode and needed a reason for it. Either that or they shocked the actress by firing her and she refused to be in the final episode, which I wouldn’t blame her for.
I probably won’t be watching the show anymore, which is too bad because the rest of the cast is great, but Nikki was the glue that held everybody together, and quite frankly the writing for that first episode of season three was kind of lame. (And I usually don’t leave these kind of comments that are so negative, but honestly, it’s like somebody poured gasoline all over the show and lit it on fire this season, and I’m not waiting around to watch it burn to ashes.)

I don’t think it was necessary. this is the problem that exists with good TV shows either they canceled them in the middle of the season or start changing people like that is a reason why people stop watching. Her character was great. Be creative and don’t put in jeopardy the essence of the show.

i don't believe this for a second. charlie and nikki were friends, or at least respected each other. she had literally just saved his daughter. he said that nikki is now the only woman he trusts with his life. why would he go and kill her in the next episode?! it just doesn't ring true as motivation for killing her.

I feel like they did it for shock value and not just to keep things fresh.It might sound soapy but they could have gotten rid of Jason or Mike and spent the season seeing how well Nikki coped or if she lashed out at the surviving guy. The highlight of the episode was when Houston asked Jason if he was okay "just in case no one asks". Houston is no dummy. Jason and Nikki did not divorce because they hated each other. I was just a little shocked Jason held it together though I was glad he did for Mike's sake. Anyway, writing out your spectacular female lead is not a gamble I'd have taken.

I was so excited it was back on and then this is what we get? At least when Chicago Fire has killed off characters it’s been a better storyline. This was poor judgement and tone deaf. To kill off in my opinion the main character, the anchor of the show, the staple and glue within the team was so unnecessary. That was a BAD decision and there were other things, ideas and directions that the show could've taken to make the storyline "fresh and surprising", killing off the leading lady wasn't it. I was a huge fan of the show and I was so excited to see what season 3 was coming with but Nikki's death killed all of the excitement for me, so I won't be watching because without the leading lady the show won't be as interesting...Really Bad Move and Extremely Disappointed With The Writers, Producers, etc!!!

Why can't they hang their hat on the stories themselves? There's always backstory, but it should be back story. The love interests and triangles etc. really can't carry the series. I do like Malcom Jamal Warner a lot as well as the underappreciated ME and when did Scott Caan becaome a 3rd or 4th banana?

The whole show is about finding missing people and she was the center of it. I am extremely disgusted and disappointed and I am done with the show. I’m not watching it any longer. I am very sad that Nikki will not be on the show anymore. 😪 She was a great character and Dania is a great actor. I can understand if the Dania playing Nikki had a better offer or is dealing with a family or personal issue and decided to leave. If so, tell us, the fans. If that wasn't the cast and the people in charge wanted to make changes because they thought it would make the show better, well the show could get low rates and you'll all lose your rolls/jobs. Sure sometimes there’s a legitimate reason an actor needs to leave and that is built into the show.

That was not a very good call, and may have contributed to the shows cancelation...I don't know who decides these things but maybe they should take an opinion pole of the viewers first, or maybe just add a new character, rather than kill an important one off....I loved the dynamic of the characters, I haven't finished season 3 yet, I'll hold my final opinion until I see it. I've been reading all the comments after just watching the episode where she was killed. I agree with the viewers that she was one of the main reasons I started watching. When I look at a new show or a movie I look for actors I like that I've seen before and story lines that I think would be interesting. Some stories can be told and finished in a few episodes but writers can bring in another story to catch your interest. I look at writers that have long running series or movies that I enjoyed watching. I can usually tell when they ruin the series by taking off key characters also. We loved Lethal Weapon but after the change of a main character I gave it 1 season if it made that. It ruined the story. They said he was a loose cannon but I hated every part his replacement ever played. Talk American Pie trash. I'm sure some that like trashy movies disagree but I could never watch any of those people again. Okay so unless they are faking her death for a reason to put him in prison it is over after this. Too many said they were done with the show because they liked her as the lead. I can't imagine it any other way. We were in shock. I also read reviews at the beginning and some thought she was too much but I think if you watched 2 seasons you got over that. It seems almost every decent show, that's not like all the rest, that I like, they take off. LA Suits didn't stand a chance. I absolutely loved Suits and never missed an episode. It was smarter than most.

I still enjoy this series. However, a piece of the puzzle is missing. I steadfastly believe removing Nikki was a mistake. Big time. The chemistry of the team was incredible & still is but Nikki’s absence was unnecessary & disappointing.

I didn’t think that was her in the grave since they only showed her hand . Until they brought in a replacement. They should have had her have to leave town because of the mob and then at some point come back and help solve a case and in the process disappear, until they needed her again .

I did not like Dania R in the roll of Captain Batista but I do like her usually.. The calling everybody baby. She just didn't fit the roll.. Even though I was surprised they killed her off, I was a little bit excited for a new dynamic & a new leader of the unit. Be careful what you wish for because the new girl is even worse in the role of the lieutenant not believable at all.. and to be honest, I don't think she's that good of an actress. I don't know. I prefer Nikki over her now. I love Scott Caan.. Hawaii 50 reboot is my all-time favorite show... Alex O'Loughlin with Scott Caan was the perfect pairing.... And I'm also feeling on Alert they're trying to recreate that partnership here with Jason and Mike. Like he's playing a version of Danno here .. I see little kickbacks to the Steve & Danny relationship in Hawaii Five-O but it doesn't work as well here. It almost feels like it's being copied... I will continue to watch it because I support Scott Caan.. and that's probably the only reason I'll still watch it.

Horrendous decision. I began watching the show because of Dania Ramirez. Create intriguing and twisting crime plots but don't kill off the main personality of the show. What an incredible vacuum has been left on the program. Heartbreaking.

I am no longer watching. Perhaps you've seen Bones or Castle—just because one storyline is resolved doesn't mean it's appropriate to eliminate characters. It seems you're not prioritizing long-term storytelling, and if the primary development is to introduce a new female character for the men to compete over, I find that disappointing. If I were interested in drama, I would watch shows like The Real Housewives. Please let me know if you plan to reintroduce her, since her death was not confirmed.

I think Nikki is not dead but went in to protective custody to protect her family till all the Irish bad guys are locked up,and she could not tell anyone so all feelings would be genuine..

It’s not the same show now. She was a strong female leader and while Kemi is a spiritual leader, she doesn’t have the same energy and kickassery as Nikki did. I’m not excited to watch the show now. Trying to stick it out to see if it gets better but I don’t watch it live now. I record it and watch it when there’s nothing else on to watch.

Killing off Nikki means Jason's Napoleon complex will go unchecked by anyone. It was already barely tolerable. And Mike who waited all that time gets nothing but heartbreak.
Every time the show has a good thing going like the storyline with their son, they cut it off too soon and keep the nonsense going.
If they had to lose someone, why not build it around the other detective who was kidnapped? They let that storyline drop. She could be looking for justice and killed.
This was just a useless killing. It doesn't make their show shocking or cutting edge

I was appalled that they killed off Nikki who I feel contributed a LOT to the series. I hope the other actors are looking for new jobs as I just don't think I want to watch a show that kills off the main character. The other actors are all great, but it just won't be the same. For me the powers that be were stupid and not only killed Nikki, but the entire show. I'm deleting from my DVR.

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I never cared for her character, or found her credible. The frequent addressing of strangers as "baby" was unprofessional, especially when she used her breathy voice.

I m happy that they got rid of her and can bring in fresh faces. If it’s true that she wanted out and stuff behind the scenes, what are they supposed to do. They already greatly reduced her role anyway and elevated Mike to make those two the stars. I m just glad that I don’t have to hear her cheesy line, “we get our babies back”.

I don't understand how they could drop Nikki so soon in this series. I liked her character! She was a major character and part of the very interesting dynamic between her x-husband and her new husband. The series didn't even allow exploration of her new marriage and how that dynamic would play out with the other characters. Wrong decision!

Scott Caan was already very difficult to watch, I don’t care for his acting skills much, now it sounds like he’ll be insufferable this season. I thought this was a show about detective work, so taking the lead, favorite, anchor character out seems risky. Without Ramirez in the show I feel like I’ve lost interest. The other characters are strong enough and well liked, that the show will be fine. Everyone is always out for the”happy ending.” I love a good, shocking, plot twist. Everybody living happily ever after, at the end of a movie/show gets boring. Besides, it’s just for entertainment 🙃

I think that this was the ultimate mistake to make. Killing off the lead character was a hugh fowpah. This will not make the show fresh. After seeing the episode , that really threw me. The show runner admits the decision was made because the show needed a jumpstart and reboot since they decided they had run out of places to go with the Nikki character. The ratings were already downhill since it started to air, this decision could help finish the show off if enough viewers decide to bail out, putting a Season 4 on ice permanently.

If it was a mutual decision for her to leave the show, or in her control, they would have showed her in the season opener instead of those trick camera angles avoiding the face of the stand in. When they want these actors gone they always kill them off for no chance of coming back. The old kick in the azz on your way out!!!

I'm sure mine is the most unpopular opinion, but I thought she was a terrible actress and hated her character. If anyone has an ex spouse, you know the relationship between her and her ex is not reality in 99% of divorces. I felt that aspect alone, made it ridiculously painful to watch. I don't know what these writes want to put so much absurd fantasy into a fictional show and make views feel like that could be reality in their own lives. It's utterly laughable! I hope they replace her with a new female lead, as we do not have enough crime dramas with STRONG female leads. This one just missed the mark.

I am so disappointed that Nikki was killed off the show. Dania Ramirez is a great actress and she really played a strong character. It's nice to see a woman in a lead role police show. I only started watching the show because it was based in my old hometown of Philly, and fell in love with it. I love that it was so intertwined with seriousness, humor and also culture.
I probably will finish this season, to see what the writers do.
Wouldn't it be really nice if Nikki wasn't dead and she is in witness protection, so she could testify against Charlie McGannon???? My thinking is that Bill Houston made Jason and Mike leave the scene so he could pull it off. (Wishful thinking on my part.)
I'm hoping that Malcolm-Jamal Warner becomes a permanent actor on the show because he is doing a great job portraying the character.

I can see I’m in the minority, but I think it was a good move to kill Nikki off. She may have been one of the main characters, but she wasn’t very interesting and they had taken the personal triangle angle about as far as it could go. I’m glad to see Malcolm Jamal Warner join the cast. He adds a stabilizing effect against the other two male leads, and gives the show a more serious edge. It had begun to feel kind of campy.
