True Detective Season 5 is taking shape as HBO looks ahead to the future of the anthology drama, with the most recent update surrounding the show’s setting at the HBO slate presentation in November 2025.

The series will be helmed by Season 4 showrunner Issa López, who previously signed an overall deal with HBO. And while the latest update is a confirmation about the upcoming location setting of Season 5, other details have trickled out over the past several months, as the possible lead of Season 5 was teased in August 2025. Below, we’re breaking down everything we know so far about True Detective Season 5, from where it is going to be set to who is involved with the production and much more. Scroll down for a closer look.

Where is True Detective Season 5 set?

True Detective is going a little more urban for its latest story, according to Deadline, which spoke to HBO’s head of drama series, Francesca Orsi, in February 2025. In an interview with the exec, Orsi said Season 5 will be “set in New York, in Jamaica Bay.” She added, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”

HBO and HBO Max content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys offered confirmation about the Season 5 setting when we asked him about it during the HBO slate presentation on November 20. “We’re still working with Issa on the story, which she does have set in New York, but no updates on it,” Bloys stated. “She’s working on the script,” he clarified.

Who will star in True Detective Season 5?

No official casting has been announced at this time, but preliminary casting was reportedly underway, according to a report by Deadline in February 2025. Since then, the outlet teased that Nicolas Cage is under consideration for a leading role in Season 5, which is reportedly set to begin filming in 2026. According to the report, Cage is being eyed to play Henry Logan, a New York detective. No confirmations have been made by HBO at this time.

Will Issa López be back for True Detective Season 5?

Yes! As mentioned above, López is helming Season 5, fresh off the success of her Season 4 entry, Night Country. Regarding Season 5’s behind-the-scenes team, Orsi told Deadline, “I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers’ room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”

López’s role was previously teased when HBO renewed the anthology series amid Season 4’s run. At the time, López said, “From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

When will True Detective Season 5 premiere?

According to Orsi, Season 5 will launch in 2027, with an exact premiere date and month yet to be announced.

What will True Detective Season 5 be about?

While no specific plot points or loglines have been unveiled, López told The New York Post in December 2024, “There’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season].” López is, of course, referencing the characters from Season 4’s Night Country. “That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” López added, but promised, “There’s a little bit of joy for the fans of Night Country.”

Of all the True Detective series, Night Country was by far the weakest of the 4. Nothing so far has beaten TD 1 with Woody and Matthew. Compelling, gripping, addicting, and by far the best.

I wish she would reunite with the original creator of the show and make a masterpiece, like season one.

Oh shit, that is going to suck just like season 4!

It was garbage compared to seasons 1&3. Issa should've created her own standalone show "Night Country" and left Nick's masterpiece "True Detective" alone.

I think people lose interest when they have to wait two-three years for another episode. This is ridiculous. If the writer need this much time to create a new episode, should you need to get a new writer who already has a vision for a new episode? Really, 2027, that is way to long after you guys had us hooked after the Woody Harrelson and Mathew Mcaunnyhy (sorry, I Jove Mathew but I forgot how to spell his name 😢)episode, which to date is the best acting and series I have ever witnessed!

Loved all the seasons, 1 being the best. However my intense dislike for Nicholas Cage will prevent me from watching season 5 if hes part of it. And you are right, its ridiculous having to wait so long between seasons.

It was all downhill after season 1. It was all about diversity and woke ideals sprinkled in murder mysteries

I agree that Season 1 was the best, but I'd put Season 4 ahead of Season 2. I barely made it through that one. In Season 4, I really disliked he supernatural elements, which I thought were nonsense. When supernatural elements enter a story the way they did in Season 4, I'm tempted to call the show Sorta, Kinda True Detective.

Foster and Hawkes were the best parts of the Season 4 series

Doubtful they will ever beat season 1. Season 2 was rushed into production IMO, and though it had tons of talent they never developed any of the characters very well because there were too many characters and subplots. Season 3 was more of a return to form. Though the ending was convoluted and far less dark than I think the audience expected. Season 4 delved more into horror, divurging from the dark modern noir procedural formula. It was good, just in a different way. I think they've realized they can't recapture the lightning in a bottle that was season 1, so they stopped trying. I'll give season 5 a watch. True Detective is still going to be better than most of what else is out there, even if its never going to be as good as season 1 ever again.

Exactly - it never should've been given to Lopez. She should've created her own unique concept. I think people are sick of these types of progressive adaptations.

I just finshed watching season 4...it was by far the best mini season I have ever watched. The entire season so well acted, written, directed. Just superb!!
