Netflix‘s Spanish sensation Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) might be over, but the show’s creator, Álex Pina, is already working on his next series as he renews his creative partnership with the streamer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new project, which is currently untitled, was inspired by a Spanish newspaper article about the increase of rich people purchasing bunkers during the pandemic. The series will be set in a luxury underground shelter, where the country’s 1 percent retreat to escape catastrophe above.

“Some of the new shelters that were being built were luxury homes in the subsoil,” said Pina (via THR). “Up to 15 floors down, with exclusive services, such as cinema, pool, spa, gym and common gardens, with water and food to survive more than five years. An underground community for 75 people. And then we thought about what life would be like there. Social, family and romantic relationships, in an underground shelter to which they had hastily and exclusively fled.”

Pina has already created several shows for Netflix, including three seasons (five parts) of the hit heist drama, action crime series Sky Rojo, and the mystery-thriller White Lines. He is also working on the Money Heist spin-off Berlin, a prequel revolving around Pedro Alonso’s character from the original series. Berlin is scheduled to debut in 2023.

“This new stage is an extension of trust as we stand alongside some of the most important creators of contemporary fiction and bridge the gaps that have existed until very recently between North America and the rest of the world,” Pina stated (via Deadline), adding that Netflix has allowed him to produce “risky and different projects, which have been written with total freedom.”

Netflix’s Vice President of Content Spain and Portugal, Diego Ávalos, said, “Pina is an innovative and creative storyteller who has inspired fans and aspiring creators around the world. After the great adventure that has been Money Heist, we are very excited to remain a home for him.”
