A Deep Dive Into Julia Roberts’ Wedding After ‘Nobody Wants This’ Mention
Joanne (Kristen Bell) knows exactly what her dream wedding looks like in Nobody Wants This Season 3. After she accepts Noah’s (Adam Brody) proposal, Joanne describes her vision in Episode 5. “I see us somewhere beautiful outdoors,” she muses. “I see white candles on the ground. A dirt path. We’re barefoot. It’s a remote mountain location, and it’s an intimate amount of people… Oh, I know what I’m seeing. I think it was Julia Roberts‘ wedding. I’m gonna have Julia Roberts’ wedding.”
It’s not the last time Joanne references Roberts’ nuptials as she and Noah embark on wedding planning, which absolutely does not pan out in a way that either of them anticipate. But why exactly is Joanne so fixated on it? Swooon has gathered all the details about the Oscar-winning actress’ low-key, secret ceremony with her husband, Danny Moder.
Who is Julia Roberts married to?
Roberts was married once before her current relationship. After three weeks of dating, Roberts wed her now ex, country singer Lyle Lovett, in 1993. In a small Indiana town, the couple planned a church wedding in three days, between Lovett’s tour performances and Roberts’ filming schedule. She did walk down the aisle barefoot, per InStyle, wearing a dress purchased by Lovett — but it doesn’t seem to be the ceremony that Joanne can’t stop thinking about.
After amicably splitting with Lovett in 1995, Roberts found a long-lasting connection with cinematographer Danny Moder, whom she met on the set of the 2000 film The Mexican. Since marrying in 2002 — more on that below — the couple has welcomed three children.

Where was Julia Roberts’ wedding?
It seems that, despite the lack of public photos of the event, Joanne is fixated on Roberts and Moder’s 2002 ceremony. Per a resurfaced People article from that year, the couple invited family and friends to Roberts’ 82-acre ranch in Taos, New Mexico under the guise of “celebrat[ing] Independence Day.” They spent July 3 hanging out at the pool, playing football and basketball, and eating turkey Roberts had made. When night fell, Roberts gathered the group around the small 19th-century chapel on her property.
The couple had arranged lawn chairs around the structure, as well as lit candles and Chinese lanterns. They had also fashioned an arch draped with white and pink silk and scattered rose petals on the ground, echoing a “Midsummers Night DreamISH” theme, per a 2002 article by the New York Post, with hints of “Wild West Bohemian” elements. The ceremony went down around midnight, was a bit rain-soaked, and lasted 20 minutes (including the reading of vows written by the couple).
When the guests realized that they were about to witness a wedding, “there was a cheer, a sort of wave of cheers that echoed against the mountains,” a close friend told People. They added, “Danny got down on one knee and said, ‘In front of everyone we love, I want to know, will you marry me?’ And Julia grabbed her heart and said, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ And all the guests were saying ‘Yes, yes, yes’ along with her. The canopy was billowing. It was such a magical, intimate gathering, it felt like we were eavesdropping, like we were invited into someone’s secret.”
Roberts also wore flat sandals during her second wedding, but it’s possible Joanne was just getting the details of each ceremony mixed up. Backed by the 13,000-foot Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Roberts wore a light pink, pearl and bead-embroidered cotton halter dress with flowers hand-painted on top.
Who was on the guest list at Julia Roberts’ wedding?
Roughly 50 to 60 close friends made the guest list, and the ceremony didn’t have a flower girl or bridal or groomsmen party. (A woman after Joanne’s own heart.) It was officiated by Roberts’ friend and lawyer Barry Hirsch.
George Clooney and Brad Pitt, according to New York Post, were among the guests, as well as director Steven Soderbergh. Roberts’ longtime friend and then-manager, Elaine Goldsmith Thomas, and her husband Dan Thomas, were witnesses of the marriage certificate signing.
