‘Nobody Wants This’ Cast Breaks Down Season 3’s Biggest Twists: That Wedding & More

Noah Roklov can “handle” Joanne Williams in all of her glory. But can the Nobody Wants This cast handle Season 3’s biggest twists?

To celebrate the October 22 premiere of Nobody Wants This Season 3, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Timothy Simons, Justine Lupe, and Jackie Tohn sat down with Swooon to discuss Noah and Justine’s major milestone, Sasha’s shocking love triangle, and all the events of the Season 3 finale. If you haven’t tuned into the third season of Nobody Wants This, now’s your time to bookmark this page and binge all the new episodes. Trust us, nobody wants you to get spoiled. Proceed with caution!

Throughout the season, Joanne moved towards converting to Judaism, and in the finale she finally took the plunge — literally. She stepped into the ocean for her Mikveh, to officially convert. For Bell, this wasn’t the biggest twist. However, she “could see a world in which she tried to do the interfaith relationship, and maybe they compromised a little bit more.” In a very Morgan-esque moment, Lupe questioned her on-camera sister’s assessment, cutting in, “She ended Season 2 with ‘I am Jewish.'” To most of the cast, it’s clear that Joanne’s conversion was inevitable.

A shocker for Joanne and viewers alike, Noah surprised his girlfriend with a magical proposal after inviting her to a fake destination wedding. Tohn said simply, “That’s a twist on a twist.” However, to her, what makes it “a mega twist” is that it felt like something that would come at the end of the season, not in the middle. Brody added, “[It’s] not the idea that he’s going to propose at some point, but when, when, and where it happened.” Much like Joanne, we did not see this one coming!

Now that Noah and Joanne’s will-they/won’t-they relationship has landed squarely in “they most certainly will,” another potential couple has taken up the mantle. After Sasha and Esther’s separation, Sasha moved in with Morgan, and the two started to seem like a little bit more than friends. When Morgan asked Sasha to travel with her to NYC for her appearance on Watch What Happens Live, they finally took things to the next level and slept together at the hotel.

“It was the most built-up thing in [the show] — maybe period,” Brody explained. After all, there have been Morgan and Sasha shippers since Season 1. “I think there is a world in which it never happens,” Simons admitted. “So I think there was also a little bit of surprise that it did.” As Tohn put it, “The whole show is the will-they/won’t-they of everything, and so it’s all simultaneously not surprising at all and a shock because it could go either way.”

An even bigger shocker? After Morgan and Sasha finally admitted their feelings to each other, Morgan abandoned him in New York, and Sasha decided they were better off as friends. (Morgan did apologize for leaving so quickly.) Defending Sasha, Simons explained, “I do think that there is an emotional maturity in what he did… It’s sort of like less of a friend-zoning thing and more of like a self-preservation, or like, ‘I really want this, but I actually have grown up a little bit, and like this is just not the right time.’ So I think that it’s surprising that he actually made an emotionally mature choice.”

After Sasha decided to keep things friendly with Morgan, a steamy moment led to him and Esther falling back into bed together. Lupe recalled, “When I heard that Esther and Sasha [slept] together after Episodes 7 and 8. I was like, ‘What? How crazy! Look at Sasha!’ I was shocked to hear that that was gonna happen.” For Tohn, the shocker was that Morgan found out about Esther and Sasha before Season 4. She thought they’d let that linger a little longer.

However, the Season 3 finale was all about moving quickly. While Morgan and Esther found out that they had both slept with Sasha, Noah and Joanne made a life-altering decision. After her Mikveh, Noah and Joanne decided to ditch their ongoing wedding plans and elope on the beach. Now, Noah and Joanne are officially married — and their families haven’t found out yet!

“When I say it aloud, I get goosebumps!” Lupe exclaimed. “The idea that they, after all of this, decide to do it alone together with their families, watching from afar but not knowing what’s happening, it hits so hard for me. It’s such a beautiful ending to the season, and it’s elegant, and it’s romantic.” According to Brody and Bell, filming the scene was not as “elegant.”

“It was chaotic,” Brody explained. “She had just come in from the ocean, which was a wild experience. We were losing light, so we had two takes… I will say the light looks so beautiful. I mean, and the flip side is, it looks great because of it.” Bell added, “The waves were huge. I was incredibly sunburned.”

Despite the elements, the Frozen actress told Swooon, “I love that they built the whole season up to [seem like] they’re just talking about the wedding, and then in the last 10 minutes, they give the audience everything they wanted.” She added, “Anticipation is the reason you watch a show. It’s not necessarily to see the climax because once you see it, it’s over. So I loved the structure of that writing.”

For Simons, this move from Noah, who wanted a big wedding, was surprising. “I think on my brother’s behalf that he is somebody that’s very thoughtful and very careful with everything that he does… Obviously, it’s a huge risk dating Joanne, and he’s sort of learning to get out of his little comfort zone,” he shared, loving that Noah “took a big swing.”

Teasing a potential next season, Brody joked, “Cut to Season 4: I’m like, ‘Don’t tell anyone [we eloped.]'” Will Noah and Joanne pretend they’re still engaged? Could a bigger wedding still be in their future? Those are twists for Season 4!
