May Robson

May Robson was an Australian-born American actress best known for her work on stage and in early Hollywood films, particularly in the 1930s. Born on April 19, 1858, in Melbourne, she moved to the United States as a young woman and began her acting career in the late 19th century, initially on the stage.

Robson found success on Broadway but achieved even greater fame in Hollywood later in life, becoming one of the few older women to attain leading roles during the Golden Age of film. She is perhaps best remembered for her performance as the tough-but-kind-hearted Apple Annie in Frank Capra’s "Lady for a Day" (1933), a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. This made her the first Australian-born actress to be nominated for an Oscar.

She often played sharp-tongued grandmothers or aristocratic matriarchs and appeared in other notable films like "Bringing Up Baby" (1938) and "A Star Is Born" (1937). May Robson died on October 20, 1942, at the age of 84.
