Phoebe Waller-Bridge Beats Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Fleabag‘s creator, writer and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge pulled off what some may call an upset, and others an exciting victory when she received the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Julia Louis-Dreyfus had been the frontrunner as it was her final season starring as Selina Meyer on Veep . But veteran status did little to sway voters who opted for rising star Waller-Bridge.

Game of Thrones Falls Short in the Supporting Actress Category

Despite having four stars nominated — Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey and Sophie Turner — Game of Thrones did not nab the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series win. Instead, Ozark‘s Julia Garner was awarded with the honor and her acceptance speech proved she was just as shocked as viewers.

Fleabag Bags Comedy

It’s the six-episode series that could. Fleabag‘s big wins were nothing short of shocking as the show didn’t really catch on until its second chapter was released earlier this year. Considering The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s success and fervor around titles like Barry and Veep, it was certainly surprising to see Fleabag smoke the competition in almost every category in which it was nominated.

Billy Porter Makes History

The buzz around Billy Porter’s performance in FX’s Pose is not to be downplayed, but most didn’t expect him to win the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series award. Early predictions favored Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk, so it was definitely shocking but exciting when Porter came out on top.

Jodie Comer Wins Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series

It was a fierce competition in the Outstanding Actress category with Sandra Oh, Mandy Moore, Emilia Clarke, Viola Davis, Laura Linney and Robin Wright all nominated alongside Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer. But it was relative newcomer Comer’s name that was called by the presenters and her reaction made it clear she was just as shocked.

Tony Shalhoub Beats Veep and Barry

Former Monk actor and current Mrs. Maisel star Tony Shalhoub caused quite the stir with his win as he beat out three of Barry‘s stars and Veep‘s Tony Hale in the Supporting Actor category. Considering Veep‘s past wins and final season status, Hale’s loss certainly threw viewers off.
