‘A Different World’: All the Real-Life Family Members Who Appeared in Season 1
A Different World returned in 2026 with a brand-new class of students at Hillman College. Many of the main characters are the children of legacy cast members, including Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley (Jasmine Guy), Shaquille (Cornell Young IV), the son of Ron (Darryl M. Bell) and Jaclyn (Halle Berry), and Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper), the son of Denise (Lisa Bonet) and Martin (Joseph C. Phillips).
Even after more than 30 years, the love for A Different World is stronger than ever. Family is at the heart of the Netflix series — in more ways than one. Not only did the writers weave the past and present together seamlessly, but several real-life family members of the show’s cast appeared throughout Season 1. On top of that, Alijah Kai, aka Rashida, and her mom, actress Tichina Arnold, got the chance to play mother and daughter on-screen.
“It was just so special to have those types of family ties on set, and then to see them in the show and to see them flourish and be great,” creator and showrunner Felicia Pride told Tudum. Scroll down to see more of the real-life kids and family members who shared the screen together in A Different World Season 1.
