‘A Different World’ Romance Recap: Who Did Deborah & More End Up With?

A Different World returned to TV, and with it came the complicated love lives of Hillman College’s finest. Just like the original series, Netflix’s 2026 revival series explored many romantic relationships over the course of its first season.

Naturally, Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne’s (Kadeem Hardison) daughter, Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon), found herself in the middle of a love triangle that is going to be the talk of the internet for the foreseeable future. By the end of Season 1, some couples had split, new ones formed, while others remained united despite the obstacles thrown their way.

Who did Deborah choose: Shaquille or Ellington?

A Different World didn’t reveal Deborah’s choice until the last seconds of the first season. Shaquille and Deborah enrolled at Hillman with some pre-existing history, and it didn’t take long for them to start orbiting around each other. However, problems soon began to pile up for the couple.

Deborah and Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper) shared a kiss that made her question everything about her relationship with Shaquille. She eventually told Shaquille about the kiss, and things continued to spiral from there. Shaquille slept with Candace (Renee Harrison) and wasn’t fully honest with Deborah when he had ample opportunities to tell her.

Shaquille wanted a second chance with Deborah and remained convinced that they were meant to be together, but she didn’t take him back. In the middle of all this turmoil, Shaquille was also weighing his future with football. At the end of the season, Shaquille was leaving Hillman and seemingly transferring to Colorado.

When Deborah arrived back at her dorm after the gala, Ellington was there waiting for her. He put his heart out on the line. “I wanna be with you, Deborah,” he told her. Deborah looked a tad torn over the Shaquille of it all, but she decided to embrace her feelings for Ellington. She walked up to Ellington and kissed him. As of the end of Season 1, Ellington has won Deborah’s heart.

Did Rashida and Kojo end up together?

Rashida (Alijah Kai) and Kojo (Chibuikem Uche) immediately caught each other’s eye and shared their first kiss in Episode 3. Their romance hit a snag in Episode 5 when Rashida told Kojo she was feeling pressured about her virginity and wanted to cool things down.

During break, Rashida and Andre (Joshua Suiter) hooked up. She reconnected with Kojo, and he admitted during the storm that he was a virgin. They were interrupted, and Rashida later told Deborah that she wished she’d waited to have sex with Kojo. Rashida and Kojo did go there in the Season 1 finale, but their happiness was short-lived.

Kojo discovered Rashida and Andre hooked up, which left him angry and confused. He didn’t understand why Rashida had felt like he was pressuring her to lose her virginity. He stormed off and left the gala with Nneka, but they came face-to-face with an ICE agent.

Did Jalen and Amir end up together?

Now this love triangle got complicated. Jalen (Elijah J. Roberts) and Hazel (Kennedi Reece) started dating, and she thought she’d found her soulmate. But then Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall) and Jalen had sex. Amir felt guilty about what happened since he is Hazel’s best friend and told her the truth. Understandably, she was devastated.

Hazel and Amir were able to mend their friendship during the storm and thought Jalen was behind them. Jalen later apologized to Amir for messing with their friendship and told Amir that he’s still figuring out his sexuality.

In the finale, Amir and Jalen kissed, but Amir stopped them from going further because he didn’t want to hurt Hazel. Jalen told Amir to meet him at the Serenity Garden after the gala if he changed his mind. Hazel gave Amir her blessing to explore his connection with Jalen if he wanted. Amir didn’t get the chance to meet Jalen because Amir broke his probation and was hauled away.

Does Hazel have a secret boyfriend?

She sure does. The whole time, Hazel had a secret boyfriend named Roger back home. She came clean to Amir about her situation and thought she had everything under control. She turned down Xavier (Dasan Frazier) at the gala when he made a move, but she was definitely feeling it.

And then came the next unexpected twist. At the end of the season, Hazel got a text from Roger, who revealed that he got into Hillman. Next semester is about to be awkward.

Are Whitley and Dwayne still together?

When the sequel series started, Whitley and Dwayne were — gasp! — separated. There was a brief (very brief) moment when Deborah entertained reconnecting with Byron (Joe Morton) on a romantic level.

Whitney and Dwayne found their way back to each other by the end of the season, united in their love for each other, for their family, and for Hillman. Dwayne asked Whitley to move to Richmond full-time since he would be sticking around as the president of Hillman. This perfect plan hit a snag when Byron announced his intention to install another president.

While Whitley was asleep in the bed next to him, Dwayne got a call in the middle of the night — from the Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet). “I really need you right now,” Dwayne told her. Talk about a twist.

What happened between Ron and Freddie?

Ron (Darryl M. Bell) and Freddie (Cree Summer) were together at the end of A Different World’s original run, but the 2026 series revealed they didn’t stay together. Ron ended up with Jaclyn (Halle Berry), and they had their son, Shaquille. Jaclyn died offscreen years prior. Meanwhile, Freddie never married.

In the finale, it was clear that the chemistry between Ron and Freddie wasn’t going away. While Freddie was playing hard to get, Ron and Freddie ended up in bed together.
