Keri Russell Reveals If She’ll Ever Marry Matthew Rhys

With over a decade behind them, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are one of Hollywood’s enduring couples, but they have yet to make it down the aisle. After their famous showmance, do the stars of The Americans have any plans to get married in the future?
The Diplomat actress seems to have her mind made up on the matter. During her October 8 appearance on the Dear Chelsea podcast, the 50-year-old responded to host Chelsea Handler‘s comment about “lov[ing]” that she and Rhys aren’t legally wed.
“I love it, too. It is fun,” Russell replied.
As for why she’s not interested in taking her relationship that direction, Russell explained, “I’ve had a big party. I get to dress up all the time. I know for a lot of people marriage is something different… We can have credit cards now. I don’t need my last name to go away. Like, I’m cool. If you want to be here, be here. If you don’t, that’s cool, too.”

Russell agreed with Handler that not being married in a long-term relationship is “sexier” because no one’s in for sure the whole time. “It is [like an auditioning process],” the actress said. “You know, P.S., we have kids. So, like, that’s forever,” Russell explained, chiming in that marriage is “big time” patriarchal. “To me, [marriage] is antiquated.”
After reconnecting on the set of The Americans in 2012, Russell and Rhys’ relationship was confirmed in 2014. That same year, Russell divorced her husband of seven years, carpenter Shane Deary. The exes, who share two children, separated the previous summer.
In May 2016, Russell and Rhys’ son, Sam, was born. She opened up about parenthood with Rhys on the Dear Chelsea podcast. “It’s kind of this incredible thing because Sam, who’s our littlest person, is my third kid, and Sam is Matthew’s first kid. I mean, he’s a father to the big kids, too, very much so,” she clarified. “But Sam is his first, and Sam’s my third. So by the time the third rolls around, you’re like, ‘Oh, s**t, you have baseball. Okay, well, I don’t know. Grab your Crocs and let’s go.’ And Matthew’s like, pack the bag. He has snacks for the whole team. He has a first aid kit. And he shows up, like, seriously.”
Russell also shared that though they aren’t married, her partnership with Rhys is a “heavy” one, made stronger by their time apart. “He’s getting ready to go to the UK for five months,” she said. “I mean, he comes back around occasionally. But like, you know, as hard as it is, the house is mine. The bed is mine. The rules are mine… You know, it’s probably more boring without him, but it’s my rules. And then he comes back and everyone’s so excited and we’re excited.”
