‘The Two-Body Problem’: All About ‘The Love Hypothesis’ Sequel Movie
All good scientists repeat their experiments, so it only makes sense that rom-com whiz Ali Hazelwood would write a sequel to The Love Hypothesis. The author is officially writing Olive and Adam’s next chapter, The Two-Body Problem.
“I wrote a sequel to ‘The Love Hypothesis’ is not a sentence I thought I’d say a year or so ago, but now I weirdly can’t imagine a world in which The Two-Body Problem doesn’t exist,” the author wrote in a September 29 Instagram statement, revealing the sequel’s February 2027 release date. “I’m really eager to talk more about this book and how it came about in the next few months. For now let me just say that the TLH movie and its cast made me fall for Adam and Olive all over again, that revisiting them was an absolute pleasure…”

It’s looking good, Hazelwood hive! The author said that “nothing is guaranteed, but MRC is developing a film based on The Two-Body Problem for Amazon MGM Studios.” Cue the screams!
What is The Two-Body Problem‘s release date?
The book comes out in February 2027, so we imagine movement on the movie front will come after that. Unless the script is written concurrently, we’re likely looking at a 2028 release date at the earliest.
What is The Two-Body Problem about?
Hazelwood offered up some plot details when she announced the sequel: “As someone who gets VERY attached to stories and characters, I know that unannounced sequels can be blindsiding, so feel free to skip this book and overwrite it with whatever headcanon you prefer, and I’ll see you on the next one!” she prefaced. “But if you want to read more about Adam and Olive, The Two-Body Problem spans a couple of years, and it’s a mix of slice of life, postdoctoral turmoil, and unflinching exploration of the hardest challenge one will face in a long-term relationship: deciding what to have for dinner.”

According to the book’s blurb, Olive is living out her happily-ever-after, even though her postdoctoral fellowship is only temporary. Olive and Adam are sharing a house and more in love than ever, but they’re strained by conflicting schedules, a grim job market, and Olive’s desire to be seen as a formidable scientist in her own right.
Who is in The Two-Body Problem cast?
Since the movie is only in development, cast members have yet to be revealed, but Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman would be expected to reprise their roles as Olive and Adam.
Whether Olive’s friends will return depends on whether they’re all still involved in her post-grad life, which will surely be revealed in Two-Body Problem. That’ll determine whether Rachel Marsh will reprise her role as Olive’s best friend, Anh, and Nicholas Duvernay as Anh’s boyfriend, Jeremy. Olive’s roomie, Malcolm, is played by Jaboukie Young-White in the first film, but his character leaves the STEM field at the end of the film, so his sequel future isn’t totally clear. Either way, the book’s blurb confirmed that Olive does have her friends.
Regardless, we know where director Claire Scanlon stands on returning for the Love Hypothesis sequel. Before The Two-Body Problem was announced, Scanlon confirmed she’d be down to get behind the camera again if Hazelwood wrote the sequel story. She told Swooon, “Watching the response of the people who’ve already seen this movie has been pretty eye-opening. I can’t think of a reason why I wouldn’t want to put more happiness out into the world.”
