Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård‘s Wicker may take the cake as the weirdest romance movie of the year — maybe ever — and it hasn’t even officially hit theaters yet. But how many rom-coms feature a sentient basket as a love interest? (We’d be remiss not to acknowledge his spiritual woven predecessor, Jonathan Bailey‘s Fiyero in Wicked: For Good.)

“He’s not the monster; he’s the romantic lead,” Wicker co-director Eleanor Wilson told Empire. “We knew that people would be excited when they got to see him because we knew we had this special thing, but no one could’ve predicted this response.”

What is Wicker about?

Colman’s fisherwoman, whose name hasn’t been revealed yet, is an outcast. She’s “smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed,” per the movie’s description. She decides to take her romantic future into her own hands and show up her small-minded, conservative neighbors by commissioning a husband made of wicker. “Outrage, jealousy, and chaos” ensue in town. What’s more, the wicker husband’s “soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something inside her.”

Is Wicker based on a book?

Though there are plenty of sentient object romance books out there in the world, Wicker is not a full-length book. It is, however, adapted from Ursula Wills’ short story, The Wicker Husband.

What is Wicker‘s release date?

The movie will get a limited release on October 23, but everyone else won’t have to wait too long. There will be a wide release on October 30. It may not be enough time for you to study up and make a couple’s costume for Halloween, though you can reference photos and footage revealed so far.

Who is in the Wicker cast?

In addition to Colman and Skarsgård, Peter Dinklage plays the seemingly magical basket maker. Elizabeth Debicki plays a townswoman.
