We’re in an era when many TV shows, particularly ones of the romance variety, start off as books first. Though Prime Video is paving the way on the adaptation front, Netflix has quite a few of its own. A number of them fall into the YA category, too, from Finding Her Edge to the upcoming Icebreaker series. So, where does that leave Crew Girl, the streamer’s latest teen drama?

Crew Girl Season 1 introduces Teagan (Miku Martineau), who’s forced to start over with her mom in a small East Coast town. Teagan, a talented singles rower, enrolls at an elite prep school with no girls’ rowing team. Her only option is to become the coxswain of the dysfunctional boys’ crew team, which includes grounded underdog Cam (Kyle Clark) and entitled captain Josh (Samuel Braun). Keep scrolling to find out if you can read Teagan’s story before or after it hits screens.

Is Crew Girl based on a book?

There isn’t a Crew Girl book — yet. The Netflix series is an entirely original story by showrunner Vivian Lin, who also penned the script. It isn’t an adaptation, though there is an upcoming book of the same name by author Sheila McClure. The novel, which comes out in November 2026, is based on the show, rather than the other way around.

“The book is based on the first season of Crew Girl, so it was kind of happening a little bit in tandem,” Lin told Swooon. “It’s an author who’s doing the novelization of it all, and so I will be interested in reading it as well.”

Don’t expect any major differences between Teagan’s story on screen and on the page. “As far as I was told, it follows the show,” Lin explained. “So I don’t think there’s going to be any… if it’s like canon or not canon. I think it’s all based on what has been established, although if there’s a wild turn, I’m happy to see it.”
