What To Know

  • The sequel to Drawn Together, titled Drawn Apart, will be different from the first movie.
  • Marfil and Sebastián’s story takes a dark turn.
  • Ester Expósito, Hugo Diego García, and Mercedes Ron tease what’s next.

If Drawn Together‘s romance kept you hooked all the way until its action-packed cliffhanger ending, it won’t be long until the second part of  Mercedes Ron’s Enfrentados duology, Drawn Apart, answers all your lingering questions. It won’t feel quite like the first installment, either, according to stars Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego Garcia. (Warning: Drawn Together spoilers ahead!)

The first chapter of the romance thriller sees ballerina Marfil Cortés (Expósito) fall for the bodyguard assigned to protect her, Sebastián Moore (Garcia). Marfil’s businessman father makes Sebastián live with his daughter following her mysterious kidnapping, which she can’t remember. In the end, Marfil discovers that Sebastián was her kidnapper.

Sebastián isn’t totally evil — he’s an FBI agent. He orchestrated the whole thing so that Marfil’s father, who’s actually a mobster, would reach out for help and give them information. Still, it doesn’t leave their romance in a good place going into the sequel, though getting back into Marfil’s good graces isn’t number one on Sebastián’s priority list. Rescuing Marfil from the clutches of Russian mobster Marcus Kozel is.

“It’s different because we’re gonna see Marfil with Marcus,” Ron teased. “It’s really hard what she’s gonna go through, and all the thriller and all the dark sides of this story is gonna be focused on the second part. So the first one was more romantic, and the second one still is, but with more action.

Garcia echoed the author in a separate interview, describing the sequel as “huge” and a “mix of John Wick and Rambo and Taken, but with the heart of The Notebook,” as Sebastián stops at nothing to rescue Marfil. Meanwhile, Marfil puts all the fighting skills she learned from Sebastián into practice, making the follow-up a “thriller, action, and then romance,” according to Expósito.

The love story, however, remains the heart of Drawn Apart, even amid Marfil’s perilous circumstances. “She’s gonna have mixed feelings about Sebastián,” the author said of the “darker” second movie. “But I don’t want to make a spoiler. She loves him so much. So at the end, love always wins.”
