Avicii was a Swedish-born DJ and producer who came to prominence internationally in 2013 with the hit song "Wake Me Up." Born Tim Bergling in Stockholm, Sweden on September 8, 1989, Avicii began his career as a professional DJ in the mid-2000s while performing in nightclubs in and around Stockholm.
Avicii experienced his first bit of mainstream success in 2010 after his song "Seek Bromance" became a Number 1 hit in several European countries, including England, Belgium, and Sweden. His mainstream profile was raised even higher in 2011 with the release of "Levels." That song became Avicii's second international hit when it was released in October of that year, while eventually earning the DJ his first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.
The following year Avicii collaborated with French DJ David Guetta on "Sunshine," which went on to earn the duo a Grammy nod for Best Dance Recording. The following year proved to be even bigger for the Swedish-born DJ. In 2013 Avicii released his debut album, True, which included the smash single "Wake Me Up." Featuring lyrics and vocals by neo-soul singer Aloe Blacc, "Wake Me Up" became one of the fastest-selling singles of 2013, and went on to top the charts in over 20 counties, including Australia, Germany and Italy.
Avicii's next single off True, "Hey Brother," was released in October of 2013, becoming a massive international hit in its own right. By March of 2014, "Hey Brother" had sold over a million copies in the United States alone, while topping the charts in Spain, England, Sweden, and several other countries. In addition to his DJ career, Avicii also worked with Coldplay's Chris Martin on the song "A Sky Full of Stars," which was featured on Coldplay's 2014 album, Ghost Stories.
Following the release of his second album, Stories, in 2015, Avicii announced his retirement from the lucrative live DJ circuit, in part due to health issues that necessitated the removal of his appendix and gallbladder. He continued working, however, releasing the singles "Without You" and "Lonely Together" in 2017.
Avicii died in Oman on April 20, 2018, at the age of 28.
