In every adaptation of Stephen King‘s Carrie, bullied outcast Carrie White and charming jock Tommy Ross are drawn to each other, culminating in the two going to prom together. Mike Flanagan‘s new take on the book for Prime Video establishes the characters’ connection across multiple episodes — but what exactly is the nature of their relationship?
Though Tommy (Joel Oulette) is in love with his girlfriend, Sue Snell (Siena Agudong), until she unexpectedly breaks his heart, he’s grown closer to Carrie (Summer H. Howell) by the time he’s single. He gives her a ride home on multiple occasions. At one point after a party, the two gaze at the stars together, lying side by side on the front lawn. He asks the sophomore to the senior prom and takes the stage with her as king and queen, leading to his unintentional death at Carrie’s hand.
Oulette broke down Tommy’s connection to Carrie before his untimely demise. “I think Carrie and Tommy have similar interests, with that being space or writing,” he told TV Insider. “I feel like Tommy and Carrie, he sees just what Carrie has gone through and wants to help her out, I guess.”

Whether or not Tommy had time to develop feelings for Carrie before his gruesome death remains up for interpretation, it seems. Was he still hung up on Sue? Did he view Carrie in a purely platonic capacity? We know he asked her to prom out of compassion, to give her some respite from her hellish year of bullying. Tommy even told Carrie’s mom (Samantha Sloyan) he had no ulterior motives other than helping Carrie have a fun night.
What’s your take: Did Tommy only view Carrie as a friend? Could you envision any feelings developing between them if Tommy hadn’t died? Let us know in the comments below!
