If Tris didn’t choose Dauntless in Divergent, would she still end up with Four?

In Veronica Roth’s The Sixth Faction, she explores the world of Divergent from a different perspective, writing an alternate universe version of her own best-selling dystopian romance. Now that the novel has been released, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about Tris and Four’s love story, the biggest changes between The Sixth Faction and Divergent, and more.

What happens in The Sixth Faction?

In the Divergent universe, there are five factions led by specific virtues: Dauntless, for bravery; Erudite, for intelligence; Amity, for kindness; Candor, for honesty; and Abnegation, for selflessness. At 16, children have to pick a faction after taking an aptitude test. Anyone who doesn’t fit into just one faction is called “divergent,” which is seen as incredibly dangerous.

In The Sixth Faction, Tris, a divergent, picks Abnegation instead of Dauntless. Immediately, she regrets her decision after finding out that Abnegation is wiping citizens’ memories under the guise of their Memory Vault. As a result, Tris’ mother convinces her to defect and become Factionless.

Later, her best friend from the original series, Christina, leaves Dauntless after losing an eye in a fight with Peter (this happened to Edward in the original), and she lands in the Factionless sector, too. It’s good to know they’re besties in every lifetime.

How do Tris and Four meet in The Sixth Faction?

So, if Tris isn’t in Dauntless, how do she and Four meet? As it turns out, when Tris joins the Factionless sector, she learns that Four’s late mother, Evelyn Eaton, is alive. There, Evelyn sends Tris to try to recruit Four. After that, Tris trains to join the Fox guild, a group that steals from the factions to sustain the Factionless, which brings her to Dauntless quite often.

Do Tris and Four end up together in The Sixth Faction?

Tris and Four end up together, at least for now, in The Sixth Faction. They share their first kiss after Four reveals that he only has four fears. After that, Four meets Tris’ mother, and he defects to the Factionless sector, following a run-in with Jeanine Matthews, an Erudite official. Since Four is the Dauntless fear simulator technician, Jeanine requests that she look into his fear landscape to prove that his dad, Marcus Eaton, an Abnegation official, abused him.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until The Last Testimony to find out whether Tris and Four share a different fate than their Allegiant endgame.

How does The Sixth Faction end?

The Sixth Faction ends with a raid on Abnegation, similar to what we saw at the end of Divergent. However, this time, Tris knows all too well why they are there and what they are looking for. The Erudite leader Jeanine takes control of the Dauntless initiates, forcing them to track down the Abnegation council members, whom they’ve (somewhat accurately) accused of major wrongdoing. At the same time, Evelyn has struck a deal with Jeanine to trade her ex-husband, Marcus, for weapons and trains.

Much like the original novel, Tris’ mother, Natalie, sacrifices herself during the final battle. However, this time around, Caleb, Tris’ brother, who chose Erudite, is secretly on Jeanine’s side. Ultimately, Tris ends up shooting her own brother to get Four to safety, which is a major switch-up from the original. During the final chapter, Tris, Four, and both of their fathers travel to the Amity headquarters, setting the stage for Book 2.

Will Tris die in The Last Testimony?

Of course, the question on our minds the second Veronica Roth announced that she was writing an alternate universe Divergent series was whether Tris would die at the end of this one as well. While we won’t know Tris’ fate until the end of the series, we’re endlessly curious whether her endgame is a canon event in every universe, or if one choice could have really changed everything.
