Freddie Prinze Jr. & Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Family: All About Their 2 Kids
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are proud parents to their two children and celebrated daughter Charlotte and son Rocky’s birthdays in September 2026. Gellar, who kept her kids out of the spotlight and off social media until recently, shared rare photos of both children on their special days.
“Yesterday was my best friend’s birthday @charlotteprinze,” Gellar wrote on Instagram. “I’m not sure how you are 17 already. You may have been the child that made me a mom, but now you are the person that brings out the best in me. (Not to mention my biggest champion) Thank you… for being you.”
A day later, Rocky got his own post from his mom. “And then, there were two. Three years and one day later @rockyprinze came racing into our lives,” the 49-year-old actress wrote on Instagram. “I should have known from your speedy delivery, the excitement you would bring. You have no idea how lucky I feel to watch you chase your dream. You inspire not just me, but everyone around you.”

How many kids do Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have?
After meeting on the set of the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer, Gellar and Prinze Jr. became friends, and they didn’t start dating until January 2000. They married in 2002 and didn’t start growing their family until 2009, when they took a break from acting to raise their two kids.
“Becoming a parent is the most selfless act, and you need to be at a point in your life where you can give up anything and everything for a child,” Gellar told People. “I don’t know if you know how to do that when you’re in your 20s.”
Prinze Jr. told the outlet something similar. “I’m so happy we didn’t have kids in our 20s — I just didn’t know a thing,” he explained. “You have so much more patience in your 30s, and I feel like I appreciate this so much more.”
Charlotte Prinze
Charlotte, 17, only occasionally appeared on her mom’s Instagram over the years. Some included photos of Gellar and Charlotte at concerts. “I don’t often put pictures of my kids on here, but last night was truly special,” Gellar wrote on Instagram in 2018. “Thank you to the incredible @taylorswift for being so kind to Charlotte. She was so in awe, she could barely speak. Thank you for being the kind of role model young girls need to see.”
Gellar and Prinze Jr. told The Hollywood Reporter that Charlotte and her brother weren’t allowed to have social media accounts of their own, though that changed for Charlotte in 2024. Despite being kept away from the family business for the most part, barring an appearance on the red carpet of Gellar’s 2022 film Do Revenge, Charlotte wants to become an actor.
In fact, Gellar and Prinze Jr. were both inspired by their daughter’s interest to start taking on film and TV projects again. “From my vantage point, Sarah always had the hunger to go back to acting,” Prinze Jr. said to The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “I could tell from the way she watches TV, analyzing it, and how she talks about movies on the drive home [from the theater]. Once our daughter started taking it seriously, both of us just instinctually wanted to show her the way we think it should be done.”

“Does it scare the s**t out of me? Well, we have rules in place,” Gellar explained her thoughts on her daughter’s acting aspirations. “She can’t be in front of a camera until she graduates high school. She says to me, ‘That’s unfair. You were a child actor.’ Yes, I was. But I was not the child of two famous parents.”
She wouldn’t budge when her Wolf Pack and Do Revenge costars encouraged her to allow Charlotte to make a cameo. “I’ll never stop her from being on a set,” Gellar said. “But she’s just not going on camera while she’s living under our roof. There’ll be different expectations for her, so she needs to learn everything there is first.”
Gellar also told People that her daughter was a dancer growing up. “I just want my kids to be disciplined at whatever it is they do. My daughter was a dancer, and I was a dance mom sitting at those competitions. And when she decided it wasn’t for her, I told her, ‘Okay, but you have to finish. You have to see that out. That’s important.'”

Rocky Prinze
Rocky — who is Team Spike — was born in September 2012. As Gellar’s birthday message to him implies, Rocky has taken an interest in go-kart racing. It’s an activity the 14-year-old does with his dad, who has shared several videos of Rocky on the track since July 2026. Rocky, who is part of the Central California Kart Racing Association, joined Instagram this August and uploads his own racing videos. He also posted a photo of a kindergarten class project, which revealed that he’s dreamed of racing cars since he was that age.

Gellar has said that “discipline and accountability” are integral to her and Prinze Jr.’s parenting, per People. “We’re known for being on time, knowing our stuff, not being crazy to work with. And so I think that discipline’s important in life and accountability for the mistakes or missteps and all of that,” she explained. “In terms of myself as a parent…we both grew up very differently than our kids are growing up. We both grew up with single parents, not knowing where the next paycheck was going to come from.”
She said that their kids go to great schools because of their parents’ success. “And so because of that, we do have to sometimes shift our expectations because they haven’t had to work as hard,” she added. “So you almost doubly have to teach them how to understand and be responsible.”
Gellar said she isn’t sure how to instill that discipline in Rocky, who wants to become an F1 driver, because he can’t drive a car yet. According to the actress, though, Rocky is setting records at their local racing arena. “How do we foster that for him? I don’t know a lot about F1 and racing, so it’s like finding those contacts,” the Buffy actress said. “And luckily, I worked with someone who’s quite a prominent racer — Patrick Dempsey.”
